Blue Hawks Drop 3 of 4 to UM-Crookston

DICKINSON, ND- The Dickinson State University Baseball team dropped three out of four games to UM-Crookston on March 5th and 6th. The Blue Hawks lost game one 7-4, game two 10-9 and game four 4-1. Dickinson State won game three 8-7.

Game 1:

UM-Crookston plated seven runs in the fifth inning after two Blue Hawk errors, three walks and a hit by pitch. The Blue Hawks scored on in the bottom of the fifth and three in the bottom of the seventh. Josh Schuller took the loss in the game going 4.1 innings allowing six runs (five earned) with four walks and five strikeouts. 

Tyler Czech led the Blue Hawks at the plate going 2-3 with a homerun and two RBI's while Dylan Skabo was 2-4. Sagan Osborne, Jacob Hignite, Austin Tennant and Jeff VanCleave added singles in the loss.

Game 2:

Dickinson State plated one run in the bottom of the first inning but Crookston answered back adding four runs in the second and third inning putting the Blue Hawks down 8-1. Dickinson State put up two runs in the bottom of the third closing the gap to 8-3. The Eagles and the Blue Hawks put up one run each in the fifth inning and the Blue Hawks added one in the sixth and eighth innings. Going into the bottom of the ninth trailing 9-6, Jacob Hignite hit a three-run homerun to tie the game but Crookston plated one run in the top of the 10th to win 10-9.

Freshman Jason Thibault took the loss going four innings allowing one run with no walks and six strikeouts. Hignite finished the game going 3-4 with two homeruns and six RBI's. Sagan Osborne went 3-4 with a double while Dylan Skabo was 3-6 with a double. Jake Young was 2-5 with a double, and Jacob Cuch was 2-5 with a double and two RBI's. Tyler Czech and Austin Tennant each recorded a single in the extra inning loss.

Game 3:

The Blue Hawks and the Eagles each scored one run in the second inning with no scoring until the fifth inning. The Eagles plated six runs in the fifth inning but the Blue Hawks rallied in the bottom of the fifth to score five. In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Blue Hawks scored two runs leading to the Blue Hawks first win of the spring, 8-7.

Jake Young led the Blue Hawks going 3-4 with two doubles. Sagan Osborne was 2-3 with two RBI while Jacob Cuch added a double with two RBI's. Jeff Vancleave recorded a double while Dylan Skabo, Jake Hignite, and Austin Tennant added a hit in the win.

Freshman Gabriel Lizarraga picked up his first career win going 2.1 innings allowing no runs with two walks and two strikeouts.

Game 4:

In the final game, the Eagles took an early lead in the first inning after plating a run on a two-out error by the Blue Hawks. The Eagles would score another run in the third inning taking a two run lead into the bottom of the eighth. The Blue Hawks scored one run in the bottom of the eighth but the Eagles plated two more runs in the top of the ninth to win the ball game 4-1.

Jake Young led the Blue Hawks going 2-3 with a double. Jacob Cuch, Jake Hignite, Chad Mackay, Tyler Czech and Ryan Mitchell all recorded singles in the game. Sean Getchell took the loss going six innings allowing two runs (one earned) with no walks, two hit by pitches and six strikeouts.

The Blue Hawks are now 6-8 overall and will host old rival the University of Mary on Wednesday in a non-conference double-header beginning at 1:00 PM (MDT) at the Southside Ballpark before heading to Tucson, AZ. on Thursday for 10 games over spring break.
