Blue Hawk Baseball Wins Series Over Mayville State, 3-1

DICKINSON, ND- The Dickinson State University Baseball team won the four game NSAA series over the Comets after splitting the first two games Saturday then sweeping both games on Sunday. This is the first series the Blue Hawks have taken from the Comets since 2009.

Game 1: DSU 10, MSU 4

The Blue Hawks took an early lead scoring two in the first and one in the second before the Comets plated two in the fourth inning. DSU answered back with two in the bottom of the fourth but the Comets then scored two in the top of the fifth but once again the Blue Hawks answered with two runs in the bottom of the fifth. DSU would score some insurance runs, scoring one in the seventh and two in the eighth to go on to win 10-4.

Jacob Hignite led the Blue Hawks going 3-5 with a double and an RBI. Ryan Mitchell was 2-4 with a homerun and an RBI while Jeff VanCleave was 2-4 with two RBI's. Jake Young was 1-3 with two RBI's, Sagan Osborne added a single, Austin Tennant was 1-3 and Tyler Czech was 1-3. Jacob Cuch had a huge two RBI pinch-hit homerun in the win.

Gabriel Lizarraga picked up the win going six innings allowing four runs on seven hits with two walks and six strikeouts. Sean Getchell picked up the save going three innings allowing no runs on no hits with one walk and a strikeout.

Game 2: MSU 10, DSU 2

DSU got on the board first in the bottom of the first inning but after a dominating performance by MSU pitcher, Zach Mahoney, the Blue Hawks would not score again until the bottom of the seventh. The Comets scored two in the second, one in the third, one in the fifth, and three runs in the sixth and seventh.

Osborne was 1-3 with an RBI while John Hollingsworth picked up an RBI sacrifice ground out. Young, Dylan Skabo, Hignite, Andrew Sampsel and Nathan Demarais each recorded a hit in the loss.

Joey Buchanan took the loss going three innings allowing three runs (two earned) on one hit with three walks and two strikeouts. Jonathan Koessl threw two innings in relief allowing one run (0 earned) on one hit with two walks and two strikeouts. Jason Thibault threw 2/3 of an inning allowing three runs on two hits with two walks and one strikeout. Taylor Dantini tossed 1/3 of an inning allowing no runs on no hits with a walk. Czech tossed the final inning allowing three runs on three hits with a strikeout.

Game 3: DSU 7, MSU 6

The Comets plated two runs in the top of the first, two in the top of the third and two in the top of the seventh. The Blue Hawks scored one in the third, one in the fifth and five in the sixth to take the game 7-6.

VanCleave led the Blue Hawks going 2-4 with a double and an RBI while Young added two singles and an RBI. Hignite added a double and an RBI, Skabo had a single, Cuch had a single, Chad Mackay added a hit and an RBI and Czech recorded a hit and an RBI in the win.

Josh Schuller picked up the win going seven innings allowing six runs (four earned) on six hits with four walks and five strikeouts. Dantini tossed the eighth inning allowing no runs on one hit and Getchell picked up the save throwing the ninth allowing no runs on no hits with one walk and two strikeouts.

Game 4: DSU 11, MSU 6

DSU plated two runs in the bottom of the first but the Comets answered back scoring two in the second inning. The Blue Hawks had a break out inning in the third, scoring seven runs. Mayville would score two in the sixth but the Blue Hawks answered back with two in the bottom of the sixth. MSU would score two more runs in the top of the seventh but the Blue Hawks held on to win.

Cuch and Young led the Blue Hawks going 2-4 with a double and three RBI's each. Mitchell recorded two hits with an RBI. Czech added a triple and an RBI while VanCleave added a double and two RBI's. Mackay added a double while Skabo, Osborne and Hignite each had a single in the win.

Tony Roberts earned the win going six innings allowing four runs (three earned) on four hits with three walks and eight strikeouts. Koessl tossed the seventh inning allowing two runs (one earned) on two hits.

Dickinson State is now 16-19 overall and 3-4 in NSAA play. The Blue Hawks will travel to the University of Jamestown this weekend to play the Jimmies in a four game NSAA series. Saturday's games will start at 12:00 PM (MDT) and Sunday's games will start at 11:00 AM (MDT).
