Dickinson State Sweeps Winnipeg in Four Game Series as Watson Picks up 100th Career Coaching Win

DICKINSON, ND- The Dickinson State University Baseball team swept the University of Winnipeg in a four game NSAA series on Friday and Saturday. Dickinson State Head Baseball Coach, Jason Watson, picked up his 100th career coaching win with the game three victory over Winnipeg.

Watson is in his fifth season as the head coach of the Blue Hawks. Leading into the four game series, Watson was at 97 career head coaching wins. The Blue Hawks swept both games Friday with scores of 10-8 and 13-1 then won game three in walk-off fashion when Jake Young hit an RBI single to end the game and give Watson his 100th win. Dickinson State would go on to sweep the series with a 17-6 win in game four.

Game 1: DSU 10, UW 8

The Blue Hawks would get on the board first with a run in the first and three in the second. Winnipeg would get a run in the third, two in the fourth, one in the fifth and two in the sixth to take a 6-4 lead over the Blue Hawks. DSU would answer back in the bottom of the sixth with five runs to re-gain the lead and add another in the eighth. Winnipeg was able to score two runs in the ninth but fell to the Blue Hawks, 10-8.

Ryan Mitchell led the Blue Hawk hitters going a perfect 4-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Austin Tennant was 3-4 with an RBI while Sagan Osborne was 2-3 with a triple, double, one run scored and three RBI's. Dylan Skabo was 2-3 with two runs scored and three RBI's and Andrew Sampsel was 2-4 with a double and two runs scored. Jacob Hignite was 2-5 with an RBI while Jacob Cuch added a double and Tyler Czech recorded a hit in the win.

Gabriel Lizarraga picked up the win going 8.2 innings allowing eight runs (7 earned) on 14 hits with two walks and three strikeouts. Sean Getchell earned the save tossing 1/3 of an innings allowing no runs on no hits.

Game 2: DSU 13, UW 1

Dickinson State would put up crooked numbers in the first four innings with three in the first, four in the second and three in the third and fourth innings. Winnipeg plated their only run of the game in the second inning while the Blue Hawks picked up the win 13-1.

Cuch was a perfect 4-4 with a double and two RBI's while Hignite was 4-5 with a double, three runs scored and four RBI's. Tennant collected three hits with two RBI's and Osborne was 2-4 with a double, two runs scored and three RBI's. Skabo went 2-3 with a double, three runs scored and an RBI. Mitchell added two hits while Jake Young added a hit and four runs scored.

Jason Thibault tossed a complete game for the win going seven innings allowing one run on seven hits with seven strikeouts.

Game 3: DSU 8. UW 7

Winnipeg scored first with one run in the first and DSU answered with a run in the bottom of the first and two in the bottom of the second. Winnipeg would add a run in the third and two in the fourth but the Blue Hawks came back with three in the bottom of the fourth and one in the fifth. Winnipeg would tie the game in the top of the ninth with a three-run homerun but Jake Young would secure the win with a one out RBI single to score Tyler Czech and to give Coach Watson his 100th career coaching victory.

Young was 4-5 with a double, two runs scored and four RBI's while Osborne was also 4-5 with a double and two RBI's. Chad MacKay was 2-4 with a double and Czech was 2-4 with three runs scored. Hignite added a double and an RBI while Ryan Mitchell had a hit and an RBI with a run scored. Skabo also had a hit in the win.

Josh Schuller finished with a no-decision going eight innings allowing four runs (3 earned) on eight hits with three walks and nine strikeouts. Getchell picked up the win tossing one inning allowing three runs on three hits with one walk and two strikeouts.

Game 4: DSU 17, UW 6

The Blue Hawks would plate nine runs in the bottom of the first with 10 straight hits. DSU would add four more runs in the bottom of the second while Winnipeg would scratch a run in the third. The Blue Hawks would plate two runs in the fourth and fifth innings. Winnipeg would score five runs in the seventh but DSU would take the game 17-6 and complete the four game sweep.

Young was 3-4 with a triple, two runs scored and three RBI's while Skabo and Czech would also add three hits. Cuch was 2-3 with a double, Mackay was 2-2, Mitchell recorded a triple while Hignite and Osborne added a double each. Tennant also picked up a hit and an RBI in the win.

Tony Roberts earned the win going four innings allowing one run on four hits with a walk and three strikeouts. Taylor Dantini tossed an inning allowing no runs on one hit while Joey Buchanan also tossed an inning allowing no runs on no hits with a walk. Travis Rowe threw the seventh inning allowing five runs on four hits with a walk and two strikeouts.

Saturday between games there was a short presentation for the seniors playing their last games on Astoria Field. Josh Schuller, Tony Roberts, Jake Hignite, Jake Young, Jeff VanCleave, John Hollingsworth, Tyler Czech and Ryan Mitchell all played their last games at home as a Dickinson State University Blue Hawk.

"I would like to thank all of the seniors for their hard work and dedication to the Blue Hawk baseball program," stated DSU Head Coach Jason Watson. "They are all great guys and I can't thank them enough for representing our program in the right way while they were here at Dickinson State University."

The Blue Hawks are now 23-23 overall and 10-8 in NSAA play.

Dickinson State will finish up their regular season when they travel to Valley City State on Saturday and Sunday to play the Vikings in a four game NSAA series. Saturday's games are scheduled to start at 12:00 PM (MDT) and Sunday's games are set to begin at 11:00 PM (MDT).
