Blue Hawks drop series to Vikings

DICKINSON, ND- The Dickinson State University Baseball team dropped three of four games last weekend to the Valley City State University Vikings.

GM 1: VCSU 14 DSU 6

The Blue Hawks dropped game 1 of the weekend series against NSAA rival Valley City State 14-6 unable to silence powerful Viking bats. VCSU out scored DSU 8-4 in the first 3 innings and continued to add runs throughout the contest to maintain a comfortable lead.

The Blue Hawks offense was led by Sagan Osborne who went 3-4 with a double and an RBI. Jacob Cuch continued his stellar play adding a homerun and was 2-4 with 2 RBI on the day, and Micquel Robinson jumpstarted the Blue Hawks offense going 2-4 with 2 triples. Nathan Demarais and TJ McCullough both added doubles in the loss, while Dylan Skabo recorded a single.

The Vikings pounded out 20 hits, led by a 3-6 day with 2 homeruns by Ben Bruenjes. Anthony Necochea, Brady Anderson, and Joe Demers all added 3 hits as well, while Jared Meikeljohn, Nathan Bagby, and Emmanuel Leyva recorded 2 hits apiece. Ryan Sand and Grant Wehseler each added one hit.

Jalen Lane took the loss for DSU going 3 innings and allowing 8 runs (7 ER), on 10 hits while walking and striking out 1. Jon Koessl went 4 innings in relief allowing 3 runs on 8 hits. Konner Goettsche went 0.1 innings and allowed 1 run on 1 hit while walking 3. Nathan Demarais finished the game for the Hawks pitching 1.2 innings allowing 2 runs on 1 hit striking out 2.

Jacob van Vacter picked up the win for the Vikings going 8 innings and allowing 5 runs on 9 hits. He surrendered no walks and struck out 5. Tyler Olson handled the 9th inning for VCSU allowing 1 run on 1 hit with 1 walk.

DSU scored 6 runs on 10 hits and committed 1 error. VCSU scored 14 runs on 20 hits and committed 0 errors.

GM 2: VSCU 6 DSU 1

The Blue Hawks bats fell silent in game 2 falling to Valley City State 6-1. The Vikings scored a run in 1st and 2nd innings before the Hawks would get in the run column with a run in the bottom of the 3rd. However, 2 run innings in the 5th and 7th for the Vikings would put the game away.

Danny Brescia led the Blue Hawks offense driving in the only run with his first career homerun finishing 1-2 on the day. Dylan Skabo and Trevor Oldham added the other 2 Blue Hawk hits.

The Vikings were led by a 3-4 day from Anthony Necochea, while Ben Bruenjes, Nate Soulis, and Tyler Ukestad added 2 hits apiece. Nate Bagby added one hit, a homerun, to complete the offense for VCSU.

Ryan Absher picked up the loss going 4 innings and allowing 2 runs (1 ER) on 7 hits. He walked 4 and struck out 3. Taylor Dantini came in and got one out in relief, while Karson Hanosky went 2.2 innings allowing 4 runs on 2 hits.

Andrew Frank picked up the complete game win for the Vikings going 7 innings and allowing 1 run on 3 hits. He walked only 1 and struck out 7.

DSU scored 1 run on 3 hits and committed 2 errors. VSCU scored 6 runs on 10 hits and committed 0 errors.

GM 3: DSU 14 VCSU 6

The Blue Hawks reversed their fortunes in game 3 pounding out 21 hits in route to a 14-6 victory over the Vikings from Valley City State. The Blue Hawks used big innings in the 1st, 4th and 8th to bury the Vikings under a barrage of hits.

Danny Brescia led the Blue Hawks offense with a 4-5 day adding a double and an RBI. Trevor Oldham had a great day at the plate going 3-5 with a double and 5 RBI. Sagan Osborne went 3-5 with a double and an RBI, while Dylan Skabo and Micquel Robinson went 3-4 and 3-5 with an RBI, respectively. TJ McCullough added a single and Karson Hanosky picked up his first hit in a Blue Hawks uniform driving a triple into the right center gap.

The Vikings were led by a 5-5 day by Jared Meiklejohn, while all but 1 Viking batter recorded at least one it in the contest. VCSU hit 4 doubles, 2 by Anthony Necochea and 1 by Ben Bruenjes and Meiklejohn. The Vikings also received homeruns form Meiklejohn and Grant Wehseler.

Gabe Lizarraga picked up the win for the Blue Hawks going 7 innings and allowing 5 runs on 12 hits. He walked only 1 batter and struck out 3. Joey Buchanan threw 2 solid innings of relief allowing 1 run on 3 hits, striking out 1.

Jordon Roos was handed the loss for the Vikings lasting only 3 innings and allowing 6 runs (5 ER) on 8 hits. He walked 2 and struck out 4. Thomas Lindgren, Andrew Hirsch and Jesse Johnson combined to finish the game for the Vikings allowing 8 runs on 13 hits.

DSU scored 14 runs on 21 hits and committed 0 errors. VCSU scored 6 runs on 15 hits and committed 2 errors.

GM 4: VCSU 9 DSU 5

A 6 run 3rd inning was too much for the Blue Hawks to overcome as they dropped game 4 9-5 and the series 3-1 to NSAA rival Valley City state. The Vikings used a handful of homeruns to top the Blue Hawks in the 7 inning affair Saturday.

The Blue Hawks offense was led by Sagan Osborne who went 2-3 with a double, a homerun, and 2 RBI. Micquel Robinson was also 2-3, while TJ McCullough went 1-2 with a homerun and 2 RBI to round out the Blue Hawk offense.

The Vikings were led by a 3-4 with a HR day from Tyler Ukestad, and also received homeruns from Brady Anderson, Ben Bruenjes, and Jared Meiklejohn. Joe Demers went 3-4 and Anthony Necochea was 2-4 for the Vikings.

Sean Getchell was handed the loss for the Blue Hawks allowing 8 runs on 11 hits in 4 innings. Joey Buchanan pitched 2 innings in relief allowing 1 run on 2 hits, while Brock Messer and Jon Koessl combined to allow no hits and no runs in 1 inning pitched.

Steven Velarde pitched all 7 innings for VCSU allowing 5 runs (4 ER), on 5 hits. He walked 2 and struck out 8.

DSU scored 5 runs on 5 hits and committed 2 errors. VCSU scored 9 runs on 15 hits and committed 1 error.

DSU in now 17-17 (7-5 NSAA) on the season.
