Blue Hawks split with Wesmen

DICKINSON, ND- The Dickinson State University Baseball team split a four game series with the University of Winnipeg Wesmen this past weekend.

GM 1: UW 7 DSU 6

Down 4-3 after 7 innings of play the Blue Hawks would rally for 3 runs in the top of the 8th inning. However, the Wesmen would answer back with 2 in the bottom half of the inning, and then walked off with a bases loaded single in the bottom of the the 9th inning to take game 1 of the NSAA weekend series 7-6.

Chad Mackay and Sagan Osborne each went 3-4 with a double to lead the Blue Hawks offense. Osborne added 2 RBI and Mackay 1. Dylan Skabo also added two hits for DSU while Danny Brescia, Jacob Cuch, Micquel Robinson, Trevor Oldham, and TJ McCullough all added one hit apiece.

Cole Paquin led the Wesmen offense going 3-5 with a homerun. Winnipeg also received homeruns from Curtis de Pena, Zac Comeault, and Cole Armstrong. Overall the Wesmen pounded out 13 hits on the day.

Jalen Lane started the game for the Blue Hawks going 5 innings and allowing 3 runs on 7 hits while picking up the no-decision. Gabe Lizarraga went 2 innings and allowed 2 runs on 2 hits, while Taylor Dantini and Jon Koessl combined to pitch 1 inning allowing 1 run on 1 hit. Micquel Robinson was saddled with loss after allowing 1 run on 2 hits in the ninth inning.

Nik Kauenhofen started the game for the Wesmen, and like Lane picked up a no-decision after going 7.1 innings and allowing 5 runs on 10 hits. Tyler Moskalyk would pick up the win in relief for UW after pitching the final 1.2 innings and allowing 1 run on 3 hits.

DSU scored 6 runs on 13 hits and committed 0 errors. UW scored 7 runs on 13 hits and committed 0 errors.

GM 2: UW 11 DSU 7

Dickinson State would jump out to a quick 6-1 lead in the 4th inning but a 6 run bottom of the 4th by Winnipeg followed by 3 in the 5th and 1 in the 6th would prove too much for the Blue Hawks as the Wesmen would take game 2 of the series 11-7.

The Blue Hawks would use a balanced offensive attack as Jacob Cuch, TJ McCullough, Sagan Osborne, Chad Mackay, Dylan Skabo, and Micquel Robinson all posted a 2 hit day. Cuch would contribute the only Blue Hawk homerun on the day to highlight his 3 RBI effort. Lucas Rissler and Trevor Oldham both added hits as well.

Cole Paquin and Garrett Jewell both went 3-4 to lead the Wesmen. Wyatt Kemball and Curtis de Pena would each have 2-4 days, while Mike Sigrist, Cole Armstrong, Marc Lepore, and Austin Pistawka all added hits for Winnipeg.

Ryan Absher started and picked up the no-decision after going 3.1 innings and allowing 4 runs on 6 hits while walking 1 and striking out 2. Brock Messer threw 0.1 innings and allowed 3 runs on 1 hit, while Nathan Demarais threw 0.2 innings allowing 2 runs on 4 hits and was hit with the loss. Alex Ross then came in to throw 0.2 innings allowing 1 run on 1 hit, while Trevor Oldham closed out the game, pitching the 6th inning for the Blue Hawks allowing 1 run on 2 hits.

Brendyn Perron picked up the complete game win for the Wesmen going 7 innings and allowing 7 runs on 14 hits, while walking 4 and striking out 2.

DSU scored 7 runs on 14 hits and committed 0 errors. UW scored 11 runs on 14 hits and committed 2 errors.

GM 3: DSU 9 UW 5

Dickinson State used power and great relief pitching to down University of Winnipeg 9-5 and pick up their first win of the series in game 3 on Sunday.

Jacob Cuch went 2-5 with a homerun, a double, and 3 RBI to highlight the Blue Hawks offense. Dylan Skabo went 3-5 with 2 RBI, while Chad Mackay and Danny Brescia each went 2-4 for DSU. Ryan Absher would add a homerun and Sagan Osborne would add a double, while Lucas Rissler and Micquel Robinson each had a single to round out the Blue Hawk offense.

Cole Armstrong led the Wesmen going 2-5 on the day. Four other UW batters would add a single hit apiece, highlighted by a Tyler Moskalyk homerun.

Sean Getchell started the game for the Blue Hawks going 4.2 innings and allowing 5 runs (4 ER) on 5 hits. He walked 2 and struck out 4, picking up the no-decision. Jon Koessl was lights-out out of the pen, pitching the final 4.1 innings and allowing 0 runs on 1 hit to pick up the win.

Cody Bartel picked up the complete game loss for UW going all 9 innings and allowing 9 runs on 13 hits, while walking 8 and striking out 4.

DSU scored 3 runs on 8 hits and committed 0 errors. UW scored 8 runs on 12 hits and committed 2 errors.

GM 4: DSU 8 UW 7 (9 innings)

In a game with plenty of drama, including 4 runs with 2 outs in the 7th inning, the Dickinson State Blue Hawks would emerge victorious in extra innings 8-7 to earn the weekend split with NSAA North Division foe University of Winnipeg.

Jacob Cuch led the Blue Hawks going 3-4 with 2 RBI. Micquel Robinson, Dylan Skabo, and Chad Mackay all went 2-4 for DSU with Robinson and Mackay adding doubles. Ryan Absher, Danny Brescia, Lucas Rissler, and Trevor Oldham each added hits, while Will Quito would contribute the biggest hit of the day getting a pinch hit RBI infield single to score Nathan Demarais in the top of the 9th inning to give the Blue Hawks their final lead.

Gabe Lizarraga started the game for DSU allowing 6 runs (5 ER) on 7 hits while walking 3 and striking out 1 to pick up the no-decision. Joey Buchanan was solid in relief going 2 innings and allowing 1 run on 1 hit while walking 2 and striking out 2. Taylor Dantini came in to pitch the final 3 innings turning in a phenomenal outing allowing 0 runs on 2 hits, walking 1 and striking out 3 to earn his first win of the year.

DSU scored 8 runs on 14 hits and committed 2 errors. UW scored 7 runs on 10 hits and committed 2 errors.

DSU in now 19-23 (9-11 NSAA) on the season.
