DICKINSON, N.D. – In the final home series of program history, the Blue Hawk baseball team lost in two of the three games to the Dakota State Trojans. The series puts the Blue Hawks' record at 2-15 in conference play.
Saturday, the two North Star Athletic Association opponents faced off in a double-header, with seven innings games. In the first game of the series, Ryan Absher took the mound for the Blue Hawks. Absher struggled through the first inning, giving up seven runs. But, his performance leveled off, posting six scoreless innings to finish.
The Blue Hawk offense chipped away at the Trojan's lead. Nate Demarais, Lucas Rissler, and Karson Sweeney each punched RBIs to help the cause. Senior, Dylan Skabo, with the bases loaded hit a triple, scoring three runs in the fifth inning. The Blue Hawks' offense brought them within one run after the fifth. Down the stretch the Blue Hawks were unable to push another run in, ultimately falling 7-6.
In the second game of the double header, Gabe Lizarraga was on the bump for the Blue Hawks. Like Absher in the first, Lizarraga went the distance, pitching all seven innings. Lizarraga did his part in slowing down the Trojans. Dakota State was only able to punch in three runs in the game. Lizarraga was able to limit the Trojans from having big innings, only giving up a run in first, third, and fifth inning.
Offensively, Rissler and Skabo kept their bats hot. The Blue Hawk seniors each tallied another RBI in the game. Danny Moreno also punched an RBI for the Blue Hawks. Lizarraga also helped his own cause pushing a run across with an RBI. Lizarraga's RBI was crucial to the Blue Hawks, finishing with a 4-3 victory.
The teams took on again Sunday in a single nine-inning game. Kooper Ray started the game pitching for the Blue Hawks. Ray started strong, giving up no runs in the first four innings. The Blue Hawks took the lead 1-0. But, the Trojans answered, putting up two-runs in the fifth and sixth innings. The Blue Hawks were able to put up another run, but it would not be enough. The Trojans would take the final game 5-2.
The games were the final home games for the Dickinson State Baseball program.
The Blue Hawks will finish their season with a series against Presentation College in Aberdeen, S.D. April 27-28.
