Cody Johnson Named NSAA Special Teams Player of the Week

MADISON, S.D. – The third edition of the Dacotah Bank/North Star Athletic Association (NSAA) Football Players-of-the-Week was announced by the conference office Monday.  Jacob Giles of Dakota State (S.D.) was selected as Offensive Player-of-the-Week for the third straight week.  Jeff Branch of Presentation (S.D.) was named to Defensive Player-of-the-Week.  Cody Johnson of Dickinson State (N.D.) received the Special Teams Player-of-the-Week for the second straight week.

NSAA Football Offensive Player of the Week
Jacob Giles – Dakota State (S.D.) – 6'2" – 210 lbs., Junior – quarterback – Madison, S.D. – Giles received the NSAA Football Offensive Player-of-the-Week for the third straight week.  He set career-highs and school records in Dakota State's (S.D.) 62-48 upset victory over No. 24-ranked Saint Ambrose (Iowa).  Giles threw seven touchdown passes, a new DSU school record for most touchdown passes in a single game (with four touchdown passes to Austin Opdahl).  He also completed 32-of-42 passes (76.2 percent completion rate), setting a new school record for most completions in a single game.  Giles threw a career-high 400 passing yards in the game, his third straight game of over 300 passing yards.    

NSAA Football Defensive Player of the Week
Jeff Branch – Presentation (S.D.) – 6'2" – 235 lbs., Senior – defensive end – Virginia Beach, Va. – Branch recorded nine total tackles (6 solo) in Presentation's (S.D.) 29-0 shutout victory over Briar Cliff (Iowa).  He also had 2.5 quarterback sacks for a total of 16.5 yards loss, finishing the game with 3.5 tackles-for-loss of 18 yards.  Branch also earned an interceptions and returned it for 32 yards to the end zone.  In addition, he finished the day with a forced fumble, fumble recovery and ran it in for another six point in the victory.    

NSAA Football Special Teams Player of the Week
Cody Johnson – Dickinson State (N.D.) – 5'10" – 200 lbs., Freshman – kicker – Sidney, Mont. – Johnson received the NSAA Football Special Teams Player-of-the-Week for the second straight week.  He converted on all six PAT extra-point kicks in No. 21-ranked Dickinson State's (N.D.) 42-13 victory over Northwestern (Iowa).  Johnson tallied a total of 402 yards from seven kick-offs. 

Recap from Saturday's games
No. 16-ranked Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.) outscored Jamestown (N.D.) 34-3 in the second-half, cruising to a 55-17 victory in the Dacotah Bank/NSAA Football Game-of-the-Week.  The Tigers held at 21-14 halftime lead before DWU used a second-half surge.  Dakota Wesleyan outgained Jamestown 531-397 in total offensive yards and 312-145 in rushing yards.  Jamestown fell to 1-2 overall record.

Presentation (S.D.) remained undefeated through two games this season (2-0) as they shut down Briar Cliff (Iowa) 29-0.  The Saints held on to a 6-0 lead and outscored the Chargers 23-0 in the second half.  Presentation held Briar Cliff to 46 total passing yards and 161 total offensive yards in the game. 

Valley City State's (N.D.) comeback versus Hastings (Neb.) fell short in Valley City, N.D.  The Broncos raced to a 35-12 lead before entering the fourth quarter before the Vikings made a furious comeback.  VCSU scored 20 points in the final quarter, but dropped a 35-32 non-conference decision to Hastings.  Valley City State is 1-2 overall record this season.

Dakota State (S.D.) posted its second victory over NAIA's Top 25 nationally-ranked team this season, defeating No. 24 Saint Ambrose (Iowa) in a high scoring affair.  A total of 110 points and 1,030 offensive yards were recorded in the game where the Trojans prevailed to a 62-48 victory.  Dakota State improved to 2-1 overall record.

Mayville State (N.D.) lost a 64-7 road contest at Quincy (Ill.).  The Comets where held to 111 total offensive yards in the game.  MSU is 1-1 overall record.

No. 21-ranked Dickinson State (N.D.) won their second straight home game with a 42-13 rout over Northwestern (Iowa).  The Blue Hawks jumped to a 28-6 halftime lead and never looked back.  DiSU racked up 431 offensive yards in the game compared to NWIA 333 offensive yards.  The Blue Hawks are 2-1 overall record.

Waldorf (Iowa) traveled to No. 13-ranked Kansas Wesleyan, falling short by the score of 28-18.  KWU had 460 offensive yards in the game compared to WU 418 offensive yards.  WU is 1-2 overall record this season.

Looking Ahead
Three games will be on schedule for Saturday before the North Star Athletic Association conference season begin on Saturday, Sept. 24.

Mayville State (N.D.) returns home as they host NCAA Division III Wisconsin-Stout.  Jamestown (N.D.) heads on the road for a non-conference game at Hastings (Neb.).  Dakota State (S.D.) stays home as they host Waldorf (Iowa) in a non-conference contest in Madison, S.D.
