SPEARFISH, SD- The Dickinson State University Football team traveled to Spearfish, SD to take on longtime rival Black Hills State University. This was the first meeting between the two since 2010 when Black Hills State made the transition to NCAA Division 2.
After a Blue Hawk three and out on the opening possession, the Yellow Jackets scored on a 1 yard run from Phydell Paris at the twelve-minute mark. The next Blue Hawk possession led to another Johnson punt. Black Hills State retaliated with a 13 play drive resulting in another Paris 3-yard touchdown. It was his second on the day. BHSU would have a 14-0 lead going into the second quarter.
On the first play of the second quarter, Kaler Ray was picked off by Drew Hebel. On the ensuing possession the Blue Hawk defense forced a fumble that was recovered by Hunter Moore, giving the offense great field position. Four players later Jed Fike would find the end zone for the Blue Hawks giving them their first touchdown of the game. The touchdown was followed by a successful point after try by Cody Johnson, making the score 14-7 with 12:48 to go in the second quarter. After a defensive battle in the middle of the second quarter the Blue Hawks were forced to punt to the Yellow Jackets with 1:36 left to go in the quarter. Ryan Hommel scored for BHSU with only twenty-two seconds left in the quarter. The point after was no good. At half the Yellow Jackets led DSU, 20-7.
BHSU scored on the first drive to start out the second half. It was a 5 play drive that resulted in a 5 yard run by Paris, giving him three on the day. The Blue Hawk offense struggled on the next series as Ray threw his second interception of the game. The Yellow Jackets would convert on a field goal attempt by Trey Fleming to make the score 30-7 with 8 minutes left in the third quarter. After more defensive stops on both sides, the Yellow Jackets would lead the game 30-7 going into the fourth quarter.
Just seconds into the fourth quarter, DSU capped off a 7 play drive with a Karsten Mack touchdown run, coming from 6 yards out, the failed extra point attempt would make the score 30-13 with 14:25 left in the game. On the next possession the Blue Hawk defense would cause a Hommel interception. Drew Johnson intercepted the quarterback and returned it 57 yards. The offense would score three plays later on a Ray 13-yard touchdown pass to Dalton Reid. Johnsons point after try was good. Giving the Yellow Jackets a 30-20 lead with 11:00 to go in the game. BHSU would get three more points on their next possession on 30-yard field goal by Fleming, giving them a 33-20 lead with 5:21 left in the game. The Yellow Jackets would limit the Blue Hawk offense with the remaining time and would win the contest 33-20.
Dickinson State finished the game with 19 first downs, 221 rushing yards, and 109 passing yards for a total of 330 total offensive yards.
Black Hills State would finish with 30 first downs, 266 rushing yards, and 215 passing yards for a total of 481 total yards.
Jed Fike led the Blue Hawks on the ground, rushing for 109 yards on 18 attempts with a touchdown. Kaler Ray had 106 yards on 18 carries. Karsten Mack had 12 carries for 33 yards with a touchdown and 2 catches for 23 yards.
Ray led DSU in the pass attack completing 6-14 passes for 63 yards with 1 touchdown and three interceptions. Gibson was 6-9 with 46 yards passing, with no interceptions.
Dalton Reid led the Blue Hawks receiving core with 3 catches for 31 yards and a touchdown.
Phydell Paris led the Yellow Jackets ground attack with 192 yards on 34 carries with three touchdowns.
Ryaan Hommell was 19-33 through the air for 215 yards with an interception.
Eriq Swiftwater had 5 receptions for the Yellow Jackets for 97 yards.
Travis Groves led BHSU with 12 total tackles. Jared Tiefenthaler had 7 total tackles, and 1 sack.
Dickinson State University will travel to Mayville, North Dakota next Saturday to play in a conference game against the Comets. The game is scheduled for a 12:00 PM (MST) kickoff.
