Dacotah Bank/NSAA Football Players-of-the-Week No. 2 announced

September 4, 2017

MADISON, S.D. – The second edition of the Dacotah Bank/North Star Athletic Association (NSAA) Football Players-ofthe-Week was announced by the conference office Monday.  Jacob Giles of Dakota State (S.D.) was selected as Offensive Player-of-the-Week, while his teammate Kaden Hight was chosen as Special Teams Player-of-the-Week.  Jay Liggins of Dickinson State (N.D.) was named to Defensive Player-of-the-Week.

NSAA Football Offensive Player of the Week

Jacob Giles – Dakota State (S.D.) – 6'2" – 210 lbs., Senior – quarterback – Madison, S.D. – Giles was 19-of-36 for 200 yards with three touchdowns for Dakota State (S.D.), despite a 27-24 road loss at (RV) Saint Ambrose (Iowa).  All of his three touchdown passes are over 20 yards, including a pair of touchdowns to Austin Opdahl.  Giles had touchdown passes of 24- and 36-yard to Opdahl, as well as a 39-yard touchdown pass to Mason Leighton.  He extended his Dakota State career school record to 69 touchdown passes, 11 more touchdown passes than the previous record holder.

NSAA Football Defensive Player of the Week

Jay Liggins – Dickinson State (N.D.) – 6'3" – 205 lbs., Junior – defensive back – Bismarck, N.D.Jay Liggins recorded a pair of interceptions in helping No. 15-ranked Dickinson State (N.D.) to a 30-21 road victory at Valley City State (N.D.).  He also had a forced fumble and recovered a fumble, which occurred in the early second quarter where VCSU's Jake Peterson lost the ball on DiSU's 1-yard line after a 41-yard reception (recovered by Liggins).  After the Blue Hawks extended their lead to 20-6, Liggins intercepted VCSU's pass on the very first play of the ensuing possession.  He earned his second interception of the game near the next of the game, securing the victory for Dickinson State.  

NSAA Football Special Teams Player of the Week

Kaden Hight – Dakota State (S.D.) – 5'9" – 155 lbs., Freshman – kicker/punter – Pierre, S.D. – Freshman Hight recorded a total of 9 punts in the game for Dakota State (S.D.), despite a 27-24 road loss at (RV) Saint Ambrose (Iowa).  He registered a total punt yards of 376 yards, including the game's longest- punt of 76 yards.  Hight averaged 41.8 yards per punt for the Trojans.  Two of his nine punts went inside the opponents' 20-yard line.

Mayville State (N.D.) fell short in their season opener on the road at NCAA Division III Buena Vista on Aug. 31.  The Comets lost by the score of 31-27, despite outgaining Buena Vista 471-418 in total offensive yards.  BVU jumped to a 2814 halftime lead and held off MSU's late rally in the fourth quarter.

No. 15-ranked Dickinson State (N.D.) won the battle of North Star's top two teams on Sept. 2.  The Blue Hawks traveled to Valley City State (N.D.) and posted a 30-21 victory in the Dacotah Bank/North Star Football Game-of-the-Week.  Each team recorded 389 offensive yards, but the Vikings committed two interceptions and two fumbles in the game.  The Blue Hawks raced to a 27-6 halftime lead, while the Vikings outscored DiSU 15-3 in the final third minutes of the game.  Dickinson State is 1-0 overall record and 1-0 record in the North Star conference.  VCSU fell to 1-1 overall record and 0-1 North Star record.

Dakota State (S.D.) fell short on the road at (RV) Saint Ambrose (Iowa) 27-24 on Sept. 2.  The Trojans were outgained by the Fighting Bees 525-307.  Dakota State trailed 13-10 at halftime before taking their first lead of the game in the third quarter.  Trailing 20-17 in the fourth quarter, DaSU regained their lead at 24-20 with 6:27 to go but SAU rallied back for a touchdown with 2:47 remaining in the game.  Dakota State is 1-1 overall record.

Jamestown (N.D.) hosted the NAIA's No. 1 team Saint Francis (Ind.) on Sept. 2.  Saint Francis outgained Jamestown 586175 in total offensive yards, fueling to a 55-7 victory.  Saint Francis roared to a 34-0 lead by halftime.  UJ is 0-2 overall record on the season.

Presentation (S.D.) kicked off their 2017 season with a 40-10 road victory at Lawrence (Mich.).  The Saints held a slim 1410 halftime advantage, but outscored Lawrence 26-0 in the fourth quarter for the win.  PC outgained LU 482-195 in total offensive yards.

Looking Ahead

This week's Dacotah Bank/North Star Football game will take place at Jerome Berg Field in Mayville, N.D. as Mayville State (N.D.) takes on No. 14-ranked Sterling (Kan.) of the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference.  Kick-off is set for 1 p.m.  It is MSU season home opener.

Six other North Star schools will be on the road on Saturday, with five NSAA schools visiting the Great Plains Athletic

Conference members.  Valley City State (N.D.) visits Hastings (Neb.), while Dakota State (S.D.) travels to Briar Cliff

(Iowa).  Jamestown (N.D.) heads to Mitchell, S.D. to take on No. 17-ranked Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.).  Dickinson State (N.D.) plays on the road at Northwestern (Iowa) in Orange City.  Waldorf (Iowa) is scheduled to play at Dordt (Iowa).

Presentation (S.D.) is scheduled to play at Saint John's (Minn.) for a non-conference game on Saturday.
