DICKINSON, ND- The Blue Hawks stepped on the field at the Biesiot Activity Center Saturday afternoon with plenty of motivation. A win would seal the Blue Hawks ticket to the NAIA Playoffs. The Mayville Comets came to Dickinson struggling on the season, with an 0-10 record.
The Blue Hawks came out and struck early, punching in a touchdown just two minutes in the game with a Hayden Gibson pass to Deonte Dixon. The Blue Hawks kept punching it in with a Dixon rushing touchdown and then a Karsen Mack Jr. touchdown on the ground. The Blue Hawk defense also stood strong, forcing the Comets to punt four times in the first quarter.
The Blue Hawks continued to put points up on the board in the second quarter Gibson connected with Jaret Lee, Dylan Skabo, and then Seth Moerkerke for touchdowns in the quarter. Nick Miller also ran one in to tack on more points for the Blue Hawks. The defense again stood strong, shutting out the Comets in the quarter. Dillon Reiner took an interception 40-yards for a touchdown. The teams headed into the halftime intermission 56-0.
Heading into the second half, Coach Pete Stanton was able to rest his first-string players, keeping them healthy for the next weeks playoff game. The reserves took the opportunity in the conference matchup to continue building the lead for the Blue Hawks. Kooper Ray found Nick Kottre for another Blue Hawk touchdown. Derek Tabor found his way into the end zone, putting the Blue Hawks at 70. In their last possession, the Comets were able to get a passing touchdown to get on the scoreboard for the first time. The game would finish 70-7.
Gibson played limited time, but went 11 for 14, for 196 yards, and 4 touchdowns. Ten Blue Hawks caught passes in the game, five grabbing touchdowns. Skabo was the only receiver with multiple catches, grabbing three for 67 yards.
The win puts the Blue Hawks at 9-1 on the season, 8-0 in conference play. The Comets fall to 0-11 on the season, 0-8 against North Star opponents.
