McGuire and McCarvel Hired as Blue Hawk Football Assistant Coaches

Dickinson State athletic director and head football coach Pete Stanton is pleased to announce the addition of coaches Michael McGuire and Russell McCarvel.  McGuire will serve as the offensive coordinator for the program and McCarvel will be an offensive assistant and assistant AD.

"We are very pleased to add two quality coaches and men to our staff", stated Stanton. "They are both very experienced and have been successful at the high school level.  They have both also coached at the college level. They will be guys that will have an outstanding rapport with our players."

Michael McGuire has been the head coach at Big Horn High school the past 6 seasons.  McGuire accumulated a remarkable 56-8 record and appeared in 4 state championships, winning two, during this time. Prior to this time McGuire was a head coach at Riverside High School and an assistant at Sheridan High School. McGuire's teams won a state title in Sheridan in 2011 and his Riverside teams appeared twice in state championships, winning in 2007.

Stanton stated, "Coach McGuire has achieved amazing success as a coach in Wyoming. His teams have performed at a high level. In addition, he has many connections in Wyoming. "

McGuire stated. "My family and I are honored to be able to join the Blue Hawk Football family. We would like to thank Coach Stanton and Dr. Mitzel for this great opportunity and are very excited to be a part of the Dickinson and the DSU community. I look forward to being a part of the great football tradition at Dickinson State and getting to work with the great coaches and young men in this program."

 

Russell McCarvel comes to Dickinson State with over 30 years of coaching experience. McCarvel is a native of Glendive, Mt. McCarvel started his career in Malta and also coached in Glasgow and Laurel. He became the head coach at Dawson County High school in 1996. He served as head coach until 2000.

After being in Carson City, Nevada, McCarvel returned to Montana where he was an assistant coach at Carroll College in 2005 when the Saints won the national championship. McCarvel coached at Flathead High School from 2006 to 2013 where he was the head coach.  McCarvel has been the offensive coordinator at Helena Capital the past 3 years where they have made semi-final appearances each year.

Stanton stated, "Coach McCarvel has extensive experience as a coach. He has been very successful as both a head coach and offensive coordinator. He has a tremendous rapport with the coaches of the state of Montana that will be a huge benefit to our program."

McCarvel stated, "I would like to thank Coach Pete Stanton for giving me the opportunity to be a part of the great tradition and excellence at Dickinson State University. I am excited for the unique opportunity to work with the DSU football program as an assistant football coach as well as working with the other student athletes and coaches in my role as Associate AD. My family and I are also excited to be part of the Dickinson community."
