Alex Watson Named NSAA Softball Pitcher-of-the-Week

MADISON, S.D. – The North Star Athletic Association (NSAA) announced its second edition of the Softball Players-of-the-Week, announced by the conference office Monday.  Alex Watson of Dickinson State (N.D.) was chosen to Pitcher-of-the-Week.

Katie Cameron – Valley City State (N.D.) – 5'3" – Senior – Second Baseman – Alameda, Sask., Canada – Cameron had a monster week at the plate for Valley City State (N.D.) closed their spring trip to Tucson, Ariz. with a 6-3 record last week.  She had three or more hits in five games during the week, including a four-hit, five RBI game versus Antelope Valley (Calif.).  For the week, Cameron batted .657 (23 hits in 35 plate appearances) with 15 runs, 5 extra-base hits and 16 RBIs in nine games.  She had a .667 on-base percentage and a .857 slugging percentage.  Cameron also swiped 12 bases in 12 attempts, including four steals versus Robert Morris (Ill.).

Alex Watson – Dickinson State (N.D.) – 5'10" – Sophomore – Pitcher – Bellflower, Calif. – Watson went 4-0 record, earned a save and recorded a no-decision as Dickinson State (N.D.) went 9-0 record during their stay in Arizona.  She finished the week with 25 2/3 innings of pitching, did not give up a run and allowed 11 hits (1.8 hits per game).  Watson accumulated a total of 36 strikeouts, including a week-high 13 strikeouts in 8-0 victory over Grace (Ind.).

Valley City State (N.D.) finished their Tucson (Ariz.) Invitational with a 6-3 record.  The Vikings had victories over Mount Marty (S.D.), Antelope Valley (Calif.) twice, Robert Morris (Ill.), Grace (Ind.) and Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.).  VCSU lifted their overall record to 16-5 after shutting down DWU 10-0 on March 20.

Dickinson State (N.D.), ranked No. 12 in the NAIA Softball Coaches' Preseason Top 25 national poll, finished their week in Arizona with an undefeated 9-0 record.  The Blue Hawks had extended their winning streak to 12 games and raised their overall record to 17-6.

Presentation (S.D.) traveled to Nebraska last week.  The Saints were swept by York (Neb.) 7-1 and 5-1 on March 19.  PC bounced back in the winning column with an 8-0 five-inning victory at Peru State (Neb.), but fell short in the second game by the score of 4-2.  Presentation is 12-10 overall record.

Bellevue (Neb.), No. 22 in the national preseason poll, held on to a 2-1 nine-inning victory at St. Mary (Kan.) on March 15.  The Bruins were unable to complete the doubleheader with St. Mary that day due to rain.  BU is 8-10 overall record this season.

Mayville State (N.D.) went 3-3 record in the Tucson Invitational last week, including a pair of victories over Mount Marty (S.D.) and Robert Morris (Ill.) on Mach 14.  The Comets added another victory on March 15 over NCAA Division II Minnesota-Crookston on March 15.  After a three-game losing skid, MSU improved to 7-10 overall record after closing out the Tucson Invitational with a 16-12 victory over Antelope Valley.

Viterbo (Wis.) split a doubleheader with Roosevelt (Ill.) on March 19, winning the first game 4-3 and losing the second game 18-9 in five innings.  The V-Hawks were swept by Purdue-Calumet (Ind.) on March 20.  VU is 6-14 overall record.

Waldorf (Iowa) lost a doubleheader on the road at Briar Cliff (Iowa). The Warriors lost 4-3 in the first game and 5-4 in the second game.  WU is 4-12 overall record this season.

Jamestown (N.D.) and Dakota State (S.D.) were idle last week.  The Jimmies hold an overall record of 15-5, while the Trojans are 2-2 overall record this season.

Looking Ahead
Presentation (S.D.) stays on the road as they visit Northwestern (Iowa) in a non-conference doubleheader Monday afternoon. 

Jamestown (N.D.) and Viterbo (Wis.) will kick off the North Star Athletic Association conference schedule Tuesday and Wednesday with a four-game series.  The four-game series will take place in La Crosse, Wis.

No. 22 Bellevue (Neb.) play a doubleheader at Doane (Neb.) on Tuesday afternoon.

No. 12 Dickinson State (N.D.) heads to Sioux City, Iowa on Thursday as they play a doubleheader at Morningside (Iowa).  On the same day, Mayville State (N.D.) also travel to Sioux City for a doubleheader at Briar Cliff (Iowa).  Dakota State (S.D.) will be traveling to Yankton, S.D. to take on Mount Marty (S.D.) in a doubleheader.

The majority of the NSAA conference games will kick off on Friday and Saturday.  Dakota State will be hosting the NSAA conference triangular with Dickinson State and Bellevue in Madison, while Mayville State plays a four-game series at Waldorf (Iowa).  Valley City State (N.D.) is scheduled to play at Presentation (S.D.) for a conference four-game series.
