MAYVILLE, ND- The Dickinson State University Softball team swept a four game NSAA series over Mayville State University on Sunday and Monday. The Blue Hawks are now in first place in the North Star Athletic Association.
Game 1: DSU 7, MSU 3
Dickinson State took a one run lead in the top of the third but Mayville answered back with two runs in the bottom. DSU would tie the game in the sixth and push extra innings. In the top of the eighth inning, the Blue Hawks scored the go ahead run but the Comets answered in the bottom to push more innings. DSU plated four runs in the top of the 12th and shut down the Comets in the bottom to win 7-3.
Alex Vargas led the Blue Hawks going 3-6 with three RBI's and a run scored while McKenna Kostelecky was also 3-6 with an RBI. Brenda Cruz added two hits and a run scored while Monique Yslas added two hits and two runs scored. Shannen Donnelly and McKennzie Bassett each had a hit and an RBI and Brianna Grayson added a hit in the win.
Abigail Brooks tossed the first eight innings allowing three runs on eight hits with one walk and four strikeouts. Alexzandria Watson came in to toss four innings allowing no runs on no hits with eight strikeouts to earn the win.
Game 2: DSU 8, MSU 0
The Blue Hawks scored three in the first, one in the third and fifth and three in the sixth while shutting out the Comets to earn the 8-0 win.
Kostelecky led the Blue HAwks going 2-4 with an RBI while Alex Vargas added a triple. Whitney Mesi recorded a double with three RBI's while Bassett and Grayson also added doubles. Yslas was 1-4 with two RBI's and Morgan Glowa was 1-4 with two RBI's while Kenobbie added a hit in the win.
Watson tossed six innings allowing no runs on three hits with one walk and nine strikeouts to earn the win.
Game 3: DSU 10, MSU 5
Both the Blue Hawks and the Comets scored three runs in the first inning. DSU scored two in the third but MSU answered with one run in the third. The Blue Hawks would open the game up with two runs in the fifth and three in the sixth. The Comets would add a run in the bottom of the seventh but the Blue Hawks walked away with a 10-5 win.
Vargas and Kostelecky led the Blue Hawks at the plate in game three. Vargas was 3-5 with a homerun, three runs scored and four RBI's while Kostelecky was 3-4 with two doubles and four RBI's. Yslas and Grayson each had two hits and scored twice. Mesi had a hit with two RBI's while Kenobbie, Bassett, GLowa and Samantha Hardwick all had a hit in the win.
Brooks tossed a complete game going seven innings allowing five runs (4 earned) on eight hits with one walk and four strikeouts to earn the win.
Game 4: DSU 8, MSU 0
The Blue Hawks took the lead in the third inning when they scored four runs. DSU would add another run in the fourth and three in the sixth while shutting out the Comets leading to a sweep of MSU after winning the final game 8-0.
Vargas was 2-4 with a double, two runs scored and an RBI while Kenobbie was 2-4 with a triple and two runs scored. Yslas was 2-3 with a run scored and two RBi's and Grayson was 2-4 with two runs scored. Kostelecky added a double, a runs scored and an RBI while Bassett was 1-2 with to RBI's and Glowa added a hit in the win.
Watson picked up her third win in the four game series throwing six innings allowing no runs on three hits with 12 strikeouts.
Dickinson State is now on top of the North Star Athletic Association with a 13-1 NSAA record and a 32-7 overall record.
The Blue Hawks will travel to Bismarck on Thursday to play the University of Mary in a non-conference double-header beginning at 1:00 PM (MDT).
