REDDING, Calif. - Third-seeded Oregon Tech took advantage of three Dickinson State errors in the fourth inning to post eight unearned runs and turned a scoreless game into a run-rule affair, 12-3 the final, in the NAIA Opening Round, Simpson Bracket.
The Owls added four more runs in the top half of the fifth and closed out the victory in five innings warding off a Blue Hawk rally to try and extend the game.
Tara Moates drove in four runs on the day, including a three-run home run for OIT, and Sydni Scott collected three hits and scored twice. The Owls had four players record multiple hits and Karly Leveque, McKenzie Shrum, and Katie Virtue added two hits apiece in a 13-hit attack for the team. Two of Shrum's three hits were doubles, and she scored twice and drove in another.
Ann-Marie Guischer carried a no-hit bid into the fifth inning for Oregon Tech, but allowed four hits and three runs in the final frame. She earned the victory striking out eight and walking two.
Dickinson State's Alexzandria Watson took the loss in the circle, but did not allow an earned run. All seven runs she allowed in the fourth came after the Blue Hawks committed three costly miscues in the field, and Watson was lifted with two outs. Moates greeted reliever Abigail Brooks with a blast over the right field fence to make the score 8-0 heading to the bottom half of the fourth. OIT would score two more runs off Brooks in the fifth and tagged Amanda Flores for two as well to push the score to 12-0 in the fifth.
Needing five runs to keep the game alive, Dickinson rallied for three tallies, but came up short and lost for only the 11th time this season.
McKenzie Kenobbie was 1-2 with a walk, a run scored and an RBI while Shannen Donnelly was 1-2 with a run scored. Alex Vargas added a double and an RBI and Samantha Hardwick recorded a pinch hit in the loss.
Oregon Tech advances to play host Simpson at 11:30 AM (MDT). Tuesday in the winner's bracket game. Dickinson State will face Eastern Oregon at 2:00 PM (MDT) in an elimination game.
