ABERDEEN, SD- The Dickinson State University Softball team split a pair of games with the Dakota State University Trojans on Friday to open the 2017 NSAA season.
Game 1: DaSU 7, DiSU 5
Dakota State plated two runs in the top of the first while the Blue Hawks scored three in the bottom of the second. The Trojans then added two runs in the fourth and three in the fifth before the Blue Hawks scored two in the bottom of the fifth, but fall to the Trojans 7-5.
Dickinson State finished the game with 5 runs on 8 hits with no errors while Dakota State finished with 7 runs on 15 hits with no errors.
The Blue Hawks were led by Hanna Andrysiak and McKenna Kostelecky with two hits each while McKenzie Kenobbie, Mariah Gamboa, Rachael Dillon and McKennzie Bassett each recorded a hit in the loss. Andrysiak and Dillon each had a double.
Game 2: DiSU 11, DaSU 6
Dakota State scored the first run in the bottom of the second inning while the Blue Hawks took the lead in the fourth after scoring two runs. The Trojans then tied the game in the bottom of the fourth and took the lead in the fifth with another run before the Blue Hawks scored nin runs in the sixth. Dakota State would score three in the bottom of the sixth but the Blue Hawks hold on to win 11-6.
Gamboa and Dillon each recorded 3 hits while Kayla Stephens, Brianna Grayson, Bassett and Brenda Cruz each finished with a hit. Bassett and Dillon each recorded a double while Grayson and Dillon each had a homerun.
Brooks picked up the win in relief going 1.1 innings allowing 1 run (0 earned) on one hit. Creech started the game going 5.2 innings allowing 5 runs (3 earned) on 11 hits with a walk and 2 strikeouts.
Dickinson State finished the game with 11 runs on 10 hits with 1 error while Dakota State finished with 6 runs on 12 hits with 3 errors.
The Blue Hawks are now 2-4 overall and 1-1 in NSAA play. Dickinson State will play Saturday against Bellevue University in a double-header.
