DICKINSON, ND- The Dickinson State University Softball team split a four game series with the University of Jamestown this last weekend. The Blue Hawks won the first and last games while the Jimmies won the second and third games.
GM 1: DSU 2 UJ 0
Jamestown pitcher Hannah Dunnigan threw a no-hitter, but the DSU softball team was able to scratch across 2 runs in the 4th inning, using Jamestown errors, to give starting pitcher Jalen Creech just enough support and pull out a 2-0 victory in game 1 on Saturday.
Creech threw a complete-game, 4-hit shutout to earn the win. She kept the Jimmies off base only allowing one walk while striking out 6. Hanna Andrysiak and Kayla Stephens both scored runs to lead the Blue Hawks offense.
The Jimmies were lead by Dunnigan's pitching, but could not muster any offense, with Dunnigan adding a hit along with Kaitlyn Combo, Linda Ontiveros, and Mikayla Frost. Dunnigan was saddled with the loss.
DSU finished the game with 2 runs, on no hits, and committed no errors. UJ scored 0 runs, on 4 hits, and committed 4 errors on defense.
GM 2: UJ 3 DSU 2
Dickinson State took an early 1-0 lead on a Rachael Dillon double, but UJ would counter in the second inning with a run of their own. The Blue Hawks would not lead again as Jamestown pushed 2 across in the top of the 5th inning and never relinquished that lead, winning game two 3-2.
McKenna Kostelecky led the Blue Hawk offense going 2 for 3 with a run scored. Hanna Andrysiak went 1-2 with an RBI, Rachael Dillon went 1-3 with an RBI, while Rebecca Lopez and McKennzie Bassett each added a hit. Taylor Henningsgard pinch ran in the 4th inning and picked up her first career stolen base.
The Jimmies were led by Kaitlyn Combo and Mikayla Frost who both went 1-3 with an RBI on the day. Tifani Schorzman, Hanna Dunnigan, and Marissa Duchi each added a hit in the win.
Abigail Brooks took the loss going 4.2 innings an allowing 1 ER, with 1 walk, and 1 strikeout. Jalen Creech was solid in relief going 2.1 innings allowing no hits, no runs, walking 2, and striking out 2.
Brittany Rheault earned the win for Jamestown going 4 innings and allowing 2 runs on 5 hits, no walks, and 4 K's. Hanna Dunnigan picked up the save in relief going 3 innings and allowing 0 runs on 2 hits, with 1 walk and 1 strikeout.
DSU scored 2 runs on seven hits and committed 1 error. UJ scored 3 runs on 5 hits, and committed 4 errors.
GM 3: UJ 5 DSU 0
Jamestown took an early 2 run lead in the first inning, and tacked on 1 in the second, and 2 in the fifth to defeat the Blue Hawks 5-0 in game 1 on Sunday. The Blue Hawks threatened to score in multiple innings but could not push any runs across against UJ starter Hanna Dunnigan.
Jamestown's offense was led by Emma Keller who went 3-4 with a double and an RBI. Tifani Schorzman went 2-4 with 2 RBI, while Mikayla Frost, Hanna Dunnigan, Kelly Halverson, and Meghan Ramage each recorded a hit.
Jalen Creech picked up the loss, pitching 5 innings and allowing 5 runs on 8 hits, while walking one and striking out 4. Abigail Brooks pitched 2 scoreless innings in relief allowing no hits and striking out 3.
Hanna Dunnigan threw a complete game shutout and picked up the win for Jamestown. She pitched 7 innings and allowed 0 runs, on 6 hits, while walking 1 and striking out 10.
DSU scored runs on 6 hits and committed 2 errors. UJ scored 5 runs on 9 hits and committed 0 errors.
GM 4: DSU 9 UJ 2
The Dickinson State offense exploded for 9 runs to help split the weekend series with a 9-2 victory over Jamestown in game 2 Sunday. UJ jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead, but the Blue Hawks would answer with 1 run in the bottom of the inning, and then tacked on 4 in the 4th, 3 in the 5th, and 1 in the 6th to bury the Jimmies.
The Blue Hawk offense was led by Rachael Dillon who went 2-3 with a homerun and 3 RBI. McKenzie Kenobbie and Mariah Gamboa both added 2 hits going 2-4 and 2-3, respectively. Shannen Donnelly, Kayla Stephens, McKennzie Bassett, and Brianna Grayson all added hits in the win.
Jamestown was led on offense by Tifani Schorzman who went 2-2 with a homerun and 2 RBI. Linda Ontiveros went 2-3, while Emma Keller and Mikayla Frost each added a hit.
Abigail Brooks earned the win in complete game fashion pitching 7 innings, allowing 2 runs on 6 hits, with 2 walks and 4 strikeouts.
Brittany Rheault took the loss for Jamestown pitching 4 innings and allowing 7 runs on 7 hits, while walking 1 and striking out 2. Emma Keller threw 2 innings of relief and allowed 2 runs (1 earned) on 3 hits and 1 walk.
DSU finished the game with 9 runs on 10 hits and committed 0 errors. UJ scored 2 runs on 6 hits and committed 3 errors.
The Blue Hawks are now 10-18 overall and 5-5 in NSAA play. Dickinson State will host the Valley City State University Vikings on Saturday and Sunday this week in a four game NSAA series. The first game each day will begin at 1:00 PM (MDT).
