Blue Hawks win NSAA series with Vikings

DICKINSON, ND- The Dickinson State University Softball team won three of the four game series on Friday and Saturday with the Valley City State University Vikings.

GM 1: DSU 4 VCSU 3

Dickinson State picked up a 4-3 victory to open the series against NSAA rival Valley City State. The Blue Hawks used a balanced attack, recording no extra base hits, and a few Viking errors, to produce just enough runs to help starting pitcher Abigail Brooks get the win.

McKenzie Kenobbie, Brianna Grayson, Rachael Dillon, Kayla Stephens, and McKenzie Bassett all had one hit for the Blue Hawks. Dillon and Basset produced the only 2 Blue Hawk RBI.

The Vikings were led by a 3-3 effort from Tatum Lundin, including a double and an RBI. 4 other Vikings added one hit apiece to complete the VCSU offense.

Abigail Brooks gave the Blue Hawks a solid 6 IP in the circle, allowing 3 R (1 ER), on 7 hits and 1 K. Brooks had no walks on the day. Jalen Creech came in to slam the door shut, and earn a save, in the 7th inning getting out all 3 batters she faced striking out 1.

The Vikings used two different pitchers, Morgan Nalley and Ashley Metcalf, for 3 innings each, with Metcalf being saddled with the loss after allowing 2 runs on 2 hits.

The final line score for the Blue Hawks showed 4 runs on 5 hits with 3 errors. The Vikings scored 3 runs on 7 hits and also committed 3 errors.

GM 2: DSU 4 VCSU 3

With a little more drama than game 1, game 2 ended just the same, with the Blue Hawks emerging victorious 4-3 over the Vikings from Valley City State. McKenzie Kenobbie scored on a Viking error in the bottom of the 8th inning to give the Blue Hawks a walk off win and sweep the day.

Once again the Hawks managed to win the game without the help of an extra base hit. Brianna Grayson led DSU going 2-3 on the day. Mariah Gamboa, Rachael Dillon, Kayla Stephens, McKenzie Bassett, and McKenna Kostelecky all added hits for the Hawks. The Blue Hawks offense also benefited from 8 Viking errors.

The Vikings were led at the plate by Kelsey Hamade and Kelli Moore who went 3-5 and 2-4 with a double, respectively. Cassie Paultz also went 2-4 with a double for VCSU.

Jalen Creech started the game for the Blue Hawks going 5.1 innings and allowing 3 runs on 8 hits. Abigail Brooks was lights out in relief for the Hawks going 2.2 innings and only allowing one hit to pick up her second win of the day.

Haley Butterfield threw all 7.1 innings for the Vikings picking up the loss after allowing 4 Runs (3 ER) on 7 hits with 6 walks and 3 strikeouts.

DSU scored 4 runs on 7 hits and committed only 1 error. VCSU scored 3 runs on 9 hits and committed 8 errors.

GM 3: DSU 4 VCSU 0

For the third straight game Dickinson State scored 4 runs against the Valley City State Vikings, but this time pitcher Abigail Brooks didn't allow a single Viking runner to cross the plate. Brooks turned in a dominant performance to move the Hawks to 3-0 on the weekend going 7 innings and only allowing 3 hits and 1 walk to earn the win.

The Blue Hawks offense was led by a 2-3 with 2 RBI day by Rachael Dillon. McKenzie Kenobbie added 2 hits including a double, Mariah Gamboa went 2-2, and Brianna Grayson added a hit and 2 RBI to round out the offense.

The Vikings offense was kept quiet by Brooks' stellar outing with Jayme Menard, Emily Smith, and Kelli Moore each recording singles for the only VCSU hits.

Ashley Metcalf picked up the loss for Valley City State going 6 innings and allowing 4 runs on 7 hits. She walked nobody and struck out 4.

DSU scored 4 runs on 7 hits and committed 0 defensive errors. VCSU scored 0 runs on 3 hits and committed 1 error.

GM 4: VCSU 5 DSU 3

The Blue Hawks just missed out on a weekend sweep falling 5-3 to Valley City State in game 4 on Saturday. The Hawks jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead but the Vikings would answer back with 2 runs in both the 4th and 5th innings to take a 4-3 lead and then added one run in the 7th for the final tally.

The Blue Hawks offense was led by 2 hits apiece from Mariah Gamboa, McKenzie Kenobbie, and Rachael Dillon. Pitcher Jalen Creech went 1-2 with a homerun to help out her own cause. Brianna Grayson and Hanna Andrysiak each added a hit in the loss.

Valley City State was led by 2 hits from both Jayme Menard and Morgan Nalley. Kelli Moore and Cassie Paultz each added a hit apiece as well.

Jalen Creech got the start for the Blue Hawks and went 4.1 innings allowing 4 runs (2 ER), on 5 hits with 2 walks and a strikeout, and was saddled with the loss. Abigail Brooks was solid again in relief going 2.2 innings only allowing 1 run on 1 hit.

Morgan Nalley picked up the win for the Vikings going 7 innings and allowing 3 runs on 9 hits, with 1 walk and 1 strikeout.

DSU scored 3 runs on 9 hits and committed 2 errors. VCSU scored 5 runs on 6 hits and committed 1 error.

DSU is now 13-19 (8-6 NSAA) on the year.
