DICKINSON, ND- The Dickinson State University Women's Basketball team defeated Valley City State University, 83-56, Friday night in Scott Gymnasium to earn a spot in the NSAA Championship game on Sunday at the University of Jamestown.
The Blue Hawks took a commanding lead in the first quarter and never looked back. Dickinson State outscored Valley City State 23-8 in the first quarter and 17-11 in the second quarter, taking a 40-19 lead into halftime.
Dickinson State shot 39 percent from the field, 50 percent from three and 71 percent from the line in the first half while the Vikings shot 27 percent from the field, 0-6 from three and 71 percent from the line.
With the overwhelming support from the student section, the Blue Hawks came out of halftime and outscored the Vikings 24-18 in the third quarter. In the fourth quarter, both the Blue Hawks and the Vikings scored 19 points, leading to a 83-56 NSAA Final Four victory for the Blue Hawks.
Dickinson State finished the game shooting 49 percent from the field, 53 percent from three and 78 percent from the line while the Vikings shot 37 percent from the field, 22 percent from three and 67 percent from the line in the game.
Senior Janniqua Thomas led the Blue Hawks with 20 points. Ashley Bentz added 15 points while MacKayla Feeney and Leslie Beaudoin both finished with 14 points. Megan Klein hauled in a game high 11 rebounds.
The lone Viking to score in double digits was Alli Vandal with 11 points.
Valley City State did not hold a lead in the ball game while the Blue Hawks seen their biggest lead in the game of 34 points come at the 7:49 mark in the fourth quarter.
With the loss, the Vikings end their season with a 18-10 overall record.
The Blue Hawks are now 23-7 overall and will travel to Jamestown, ND on Sunday to play in the NSAA Championship game against the Jimmies at 1:00 PM (MDT).
