Dickinson State Women's Basketball Picked to Finish 2nd in the NSAA Pre-Season Coaches Poll

MADISON, S.D. – The Dickinson State University Women's Basketball team has been picked to finish second in the NSAA, announced Monday by the conference office.  The Blue Hawks tallied two (2) first-place votes in the coaches' preseason poll.

The Blue Hawks are coming off a 23-9 overall record last season and finished third in the NSAA regular season with a 9-3 record and a trip to the NAIA DII Women's Basketball National Tournament.

Dickinson State (N.D.) garnered the remaining first-place votes and was picked to finish second with 70 points.

Jamestown defeated Dickinson State 65-63 in last year NSAA Women's Basketball Postseason Conference Tournament's championship game.  The Jimmies and Blue Hawks qualified for the NAIA Division II Women's Basketball National Tournament last March, dropping in the opening round.

UJ was 29-5 overall record with a No. 16 ranking and finished the NSAA conference with an undefeated 12-0 record in 2015-16.  Dickinson State was No. 24 in the national poll with a 23-9 overall record and 9-3 NSAA conference record.

Valley City State (N.D.) was picked to finish third with 65 points.  The Vikings were 18-10 overall record and 10-3 NSAA conference record in 2015-16.

Mayville State (N.D.) edged Dakota State (S.D.) 41-31 for the fourth spot in the poll.  Bellevue (Neb.) will be making their women's basketball debut this season, bringing a total of nine (9) teams in the women's basketball league.  The Bruins were predicted to finish sixth with 33 points.  Presentation (S.D.) is seventh with 26 points, followed by Viterbo (Wis.) eighth with 19 points and Waldorf (Iowa) ninth with 16 points.

Points are awarded on a 9-1 basis and coaches could vote for their own team.

Each NSAA members will be playing a total of 16 conference games this season, with each team playing home and away games during the conference season.

The NSAA conference season gets underway on Dec. 2 with the battle of top two teams in the conference, Dickinson State visiting Jamestown.  Valley City State travels to Mayville State and Presentation hosts Dakota State on the same night.  Additionally, Bellevue will be playing their first-ever NSAA conference game at Viterbo on Dec. 2 and another trip to Waldorf on Dec. 3.

The North Star Women's Basketball Postseason Tournament Champion will receive an automatic bid to the NAIA Division II National Tournament to be held in Sioux City, Iowa.  The national tournament takes place on March 8 through March 14.
