Northern Nevada MVP to Join Blue Hawks Basketball and Softball

Dickinson, ND – Dickinson State University women's basketball coach Liz Lewis and softball coach Kristen Fleury are pleased to announce the signing of dual sport athlete Caitlyn Welch. Welch is a two-sport All-State stand-out from Churchill County High School in Fallon, NV.

"Welch brings three valuable assets to the floor: a tough, uncanny grit to defend, forward thinking on the offense, and most importantly, an enthusiasm for the game of basketball that drives her potential," said Churchill County High School Head Coach Anne Smith.

While at Churchill County High School, Welch was a four-year letter winner in both basketball and softball.  In basketball, she led her team to back-to-back state championship titles her junior and senior year. Her team also had two Northern Nevada 3A Championships and three undefeated league seasons, posting a 48-0 record, all while outscoring their opponents 2,686 to 1,172. Welch received All-League and All-State honors during her tenure.  Her sophomore year, she was a Second Team All- League Shooting Guard. Her junior and senior seasons, she was First Team All-League and All-State. She was also voted Northern Nevada's Most Valuable Player her senior year.

"Caitlyn is an all-around phenomenal athlete. She plays aggressive and can defend very well. Offensively, she can score from all areas of the floor. Caitlyn will add a great level of competitive play and toughness to our team. We cannot wait to get her on the floor this fall," said Coach Lewis.

In softball, Welch was named Honorable Mention First and Second Baseman her freshman year. Her sophomore season she was named Second Team All-League Second Baseman and Catcher. Her junior year she was First Team All-League and All-State Second Baseman and Catcher. Her batting average is .420 and on base percentage is .489. Defensively she adds a Fielding Percentage of .989. Her team won the State Championship in 2015, Regional Runner-Up in 2016, and were League Champs and State Runner-Up in 2017. In a few weeks, the CCHS softball team will make another run at the State Title.

Coach Fleury stated, "We are excited for Caitlyn to join our softball program. She has all the tools to be successful on and off the field. She will bring athleticism and passion to the field for us. We are excited to watch her grow the next four years in a Blue Hawk uniform."

Welch is also a member of the National Honor Society and Block F.

Caitlyn will pursue a degree in Elementary Education while attending DSU.  "Dickinson State University has a great field of study for Elementary Education and that is most important to me. The basketball and softball programs have great coaches who can lead the team to success. The city of Dickinson is small like what I am used to, and it has great community support throughout all of its athletics. I am extremely excited to be furthering my education, basketball, and softball careers at Dickinson State University."
