TOPEKA, KS- The Dickinson State University Wrestling team placed eighth in the 2016 NAIA National Championships last weekend.
The Blue Hawk wrestling team finished fourth in the central qualifier and their region placed four teams in the top eight at the national meet. Dickinson State finished three points away from sixth place.
Taylor Hodel led the Blue Hawks at the national meet finishing third at 165. Hodel received a first round bye then pinned Daniel Rittell from Williams Baptist in the second round. Taylor then defeated Trevor Devestern of Dakota Wesleyan in the quarterfinals before losing to Blake Cooper of Warner Pacific in the semifinal match. Hodel then beat Connor Middleton of Baker in the consolation semifinal match to move onto the third place match which he won via pin over Ricky McCarther of Oklahoma City.
Jonathan Solano received a first round bye at 184 then beat Tyler Dilbert of Williams Baptist before losing to Ryan McWatters of Southern Oregon in the quarterfinal match. Solano then defeated Dillion Fransisco of Davenport and Jacob Dempsey of Life to face teammate Lane Oversen in the consolation semifinal match. Jon pinned Lane but then fell to LJ Grayson in the third place match to finish fourth at 184.
Hudson Buck finished fifth at 197. Buck defeated Tanner Fischer of Southern Oregon in round one then defeated Ken Burkhard Jr of Concordia in the second round. Hudson then lost to Dalton Bailey of Life in the quarterfinal match but rallied back to beat Kasey Crump of Ottowa before beating Chandler Knight of Doane in the consolation round five. Buck then lost to Garrett Demers of MSU-Northern before beating Donovan Fouchey of Missouri Valley in the fifth place match.
Lane Oversen finished 6th at 184. Lane defeated Trevor Whittaker of Bethany in round one then beat Jacob Dempsey of Life in round two. Oversen then defeated Jeffrey Haley of Williams Baptist in the quarterfinal match before falling to Michael Pixley of Grand View and Jon Solano. Lane was beat by Michael Napier of Wayland Baptist in the fifth place match.
Hodel, Solano, Buck and Oversen all received All-American status for finishing top six in their weight classes.
Seth Ehlang did not place at 149 going 1-2 at the national meet. Seth earned a first round bye but was defeated by Jaedin Sklapsky of Campbellsville in round two. Ehlang then defeated Garrett Carter of St. Catharine before losing to William Upson of Missouri Baptist in consolation round three.
Deshun Haynes did not place at 125 after going 0-2 at the national meet. Haynes was defeated by Quintel Fuchs of MSU-Northern in round one then lost to Dmitri Smith from Concordia in the consolation round one match.
Cody Johnson did not place at 174 going 0-2 at the national meet. Johnson lost to Kevin Corbett of Doane in the opening round then lost to Jamie Shawver of Oklahoma City in the consolation round one match.
