DSU Wrestlers for Reading

DICKINSON, ND- The Dickinson State University Wrestling team with the help of Diane Duchscher of Home and Land Real Estate purchased, read, and gave away 350 books to second graders around 20 different class rooms in the Dickinson elementary school system.

The Blue Hawk Wrestling team has been reading to the second graders in Dickinson for approximately ten years. Over the span of the ten years the wrestling program donated over 4,900 books and next year the team will break 5,000 books.

Giving back to the community is a rewarding feeling to the young men in the program. The wrestlers want to set a positive example for others and help make a difference in Dickinson. All members of the Dickinson State Wrestling team played a vital role in helping with fundraising, choosing books, scheduling, and reading to the kids.

As the wrestlers read to the second graders, they got to answer questions on why they wrestle and why they attend DSU. The young men encourage the kids about the importance of reading, education and being a student-athlete. All the books serve as a free ticket to all home Dickinson State Wrestling events.

"We have a real opportunity to make a positive impact in the community especially the youth and wanted to make sure that the kids know the importance of their education if they want to excel in sports later in life," said DSU Head Wrestling Coach Justin Schlecht.
