Blue Hawks Open Outdoor Season in Spearfish

SPEARFISH, S.D. – The men's and women's Blue Hawk Track & Field teams traveled to Black Hills State University the Yellow Jacket Spring Open. The event was the Blue Hawks' first outdoor event of the season. For many of the athletes it was their first action in competition since the North Star Athletic Association Indoor Championships in early February.

The women's team saw success in multiple events throughout the day. The women's 4x100 meter relay team of Shelbi McGee, Abby Honeyman, Mackenzie Grubbs, and Megan Erickson finished first in the field with a time of 49.10. The time finished the Blue Hawks a full two seconds ahead of their nearest competition, South Dakota Mines. Grubbs and Honeyman would continue success later in the 100 meter hurdles. A freshman from Upton, Wyo., Grubbs finished first in the event with a time of 15.8. Honeyman finished right behind her teammate with a time of 15.85, taking second in the event. McGee and Erickson finished towards the top in the 200-meter. McGee finished second with a time of 27.33. Erickson finished just behind McGee with a time of 27.81.

Success on the track continued for the Blue Hawk women's team. In the 1500-meter run, Bailey Smith led the Blue Hawks with a time of 5:08. The two Blue Hawk teams competing in the 4x400 meter relay finished third and fourth amongst the field.

The Blue Hawks success in the field events came in javelin. Paitton Herbst threw 35.35 meters finishing fourth. Her teammate Abbey Schantz finished fifth with a throw of 35.07 meters.

On the men's side success continued for the Blue Hawks. Cleet Wrzesinski continued his success off his NAIA All-American performance in indoor track. Wrzesinski finished first in the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 15.42.

In the triple jump event Blue Hawks Tyler Quilling, Ty Stanton, and Jay Liggins all finished amongst the top four. Quilling won the event with a jump of 13.78 meters, Stanton took third at 13.47 meters and Liggins with 13.25 finished fourth. The jumpers saw success in the long jump as well. Stanton took second in the event with a jump of 6.81 meters. Liggins, Zach Girard, and Tyler Quilling took the third through fifth places respectively.

Jeff Fisher competed strong for the Blue Hawks in the hammer throw. Fisher finished seventh in the event, throwing a distance of 40.19 meters. Blue Hawk, Reece Hutton finished sixth in the discus throw with a distance of 41.06 meters.

The Blue Hawk teams will return to action March 29 at the MSU-Billings Invite.
