Volleyball Battles Close with Vikings on Senior Night

DICKINSON, ND- The Blue Hawk volleyball team took on the Valley City Vikings Saturday afternoon for their final game of the 2017 season. The Blue Hawks battled the Vikings earlier in the season and the Vikings were victorious in a 3-0 affair.

Saturday, the Vikings jumped out to an early lead in the first set. But, the Blue Hawks slowly chipped away at Valley's lead. The two teams battled back and forth down the stretch in the first set. Ultimately the Vikings attack was too much for DSU and Valley took the first set 25-23.

In the second set the Blue Hawks responded. The DSU team came out strong and jumped out to a 14-7 lead. The Blue Hawks held their distance from the Vikings, not allowing them within five points. The Blue Hawks pulled away towards the end of the set and won 25-14.

In the third, the Blue Hawks continued steady play. The Blue Hawks, with the help of a strong start, took the third set 25-18. To begin the fourth set the Blue Hawks gave up four straight aces to the Valley service. That hole proved too big for the Blue Hawks and the Vikings were able to ride the momentum to a 25-21 fourth set victory.

Into the winner-take-all fifth set both the Blue Hawks and Vikings were high energy looking for the win. The Blue Hawks took a strong 8-3 lead and held the five-point margin to 13-8. But, the Vikings began chipping away at the lead and cut the Blue Hawk lead to 14-13. The Vikings then rallied taking the lead for the first time in the set, 15-14. The Blue Hawks knotted things back up at 15, but gave up two quick points to the Vikings, ending the set 17-15 and the match 3-2.
