Ryan Upchurch is in his fifth season as an assistant coach with the Dickinson State University wrestling program and brings over two decades of coaching experience at both the high school and collegiate levels.
A 2006 graduate of Dickinson State University, Upchurch earned his bachelor’s degree in history while competing for the Blue Hawk wrestling team from 2003 to 2005. Prior to his time at DSU, he wrestled for Sacramento City College in California, where he was a member of the 2000 California Community College State Dual Meet Championship team.
Following his collegiate career, Upchurch returned to his alma mater, Calaveras High School in California, where he began a 16-year run as a teacher and wrestling coach. Over that span, he helped lead Calaveras to 15 Sac-Joaquin Section championships and ended his tenure with a three-year undefeated dual meet streak. He played a significant role in the development of numerous collegiate-bound wrestlers, including Dickinson State All-American and former assistant coach Tyler Brown (Class of 2016).
In addition to his coaching duties at DSU, Upchurch serves as a social studies teacher at Dickinson High School. He and his wife, Leah, a 2007 Dickinson State graduate, reside in Dickinson with their three children: Devlin, Fischer, and Sienna.
Now in his 21st year of coaching overall, Upchurch continues to contribute to the tradition and success of Blue Hawk wrestling through his leadership, experience, and commitment to student-athlete development.
