Derek Selvig enters his sixth season as the head men’s basketball coach at Dickinson State University, coming off his most successful season in 2024–25. He led the Blue Hawks to their first NSAA regular season and tournament championships in 20 years and was named North Star Athletic Association Coach of the Year. Under Selvig’s leadership, the Blue Hawks became the league’s top defensive team while also ranking among the most efficient offenses in the conference.
Throughout his tenure, Selvig has developed numerous All-Conference players. In 2024–25, senior guard Kose Egbule was named NAIA Third Team All-American, NSAA Player of the Year, and First Team All-Conference. Senior guard John Evans earned his third career All-Conference selection, also landing on the First Team. Junior forward Cordell Stinson was named to the Second Team All-Conference and NSAA All-Defense Team, while senior guard Trey Stevens earned Second Team honors and senior guard Aidan Fishell received Honorable Mention.
Before taking over at Dickinson State, Selvig served as an assistant coach at Montana Tech University (2016–2019), where he helped guide the Orediggers to their most wins in two decades, back-to-back winning seasons, and the program’s first victory over an NCAA Division I opponent.
Selvig’s coaching career followed a successful playing career. He played professionally in Gotha, Germany, with the BiG Oettinger Rockets before returning to the U.S. as an assistant coach at Billings West High School in Montana.
As a player, Selvig starred at the University of Montana (2007–2012), where the 7-foot power forward helped lead the Grizzlies to back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances. He finished his career with 844 points, 560 rebounds, and a 40 percent career shooting mark from three-point range.
A native of Glendive, Montana, Selvig was a standout at Dawson County High School, where he led the team to a 44–4 record during his junior and senior seasons under the coaching of his father, Doug. He was a four-time state tournament qualifier, the 2007 Montana Gatorade Player of the Year, and ranked among the top 150 high school players nationally.
Derek resides in Dickinson, North Dakota, with his wife, Maddie.
