Blue Hawks Remain Undefeated at Home

Dickinson, ND: The No. 21 Dickinson State University Blue Hawks (5-2, 3-1) defeated Mayville State University (1-6, 0-4) in Saturday's Homecoming game with a 40-14 victory over the Comets. Temperatures hovered around 30 degrees for the duration of the game, but that would not deter the Hawks as they moved into a two-way tie with Waldorf for the top spot in the NSAA conference.

On offense, the Hawks totaled 462 yards of offense with 322 yards rushing and 140 yards passing. The scoring started early with the Hawks dominating the first and second quarters by scoring four unanswered touchdowns. Early into the first quarter, Hayden Gibson found Tyger Frye with a 9-yard pass for a touchdown at the 9:16 mark. Later in the first quarter, Amad Andrews scored on a 19-yard run to put the Hawks up 14-0.

The second quarter saw more of the same with the Hawks scoring an additional two touchdowns. One on a 23-yard touchdown pass from Gibson to Randy Ivey at the 8:23 mark. Gibson would again connect with Ivey for the final touchdown of the half, and the Hawks would go into the break with a comfortable 27-0 advantage.

The Blue Hawks came out at half with the momentum in their favor. The 3rd quarter featured some great defensive efforts early on including Jay Liggins breaking up a pass that could have put the Comets in the end zone. Daniel Moreno also played a major factor defensively, racking up multiple tackles including a forced fumble that saw DSU's Mitch Mehrere on the recovery. The Comets would remain scoreless with the Hawks putting the only points on the bored at the 3:21 mark when Gibson found teammate Jordan Walker for a touchdown bringing the Hawks to a 33-0 lead going into the fourth quarter.

The Mayville Comets did put an end to the home field shutout in the fourth quarter by scoring early. The Hawks would answer when Kooper Ray scored on a quarterback keeper at the 5:45 spot, but Mayville did end with the final offensive push, scoring the last points of the game. Despite the Comet's fourth quarter efforts, the Hawks brought it home with the sizeable 40-14 win.

Daniel Moreno led the way defensively with 12 total tackles, including 2 sacks and 3 tackles for loss.

UP NEXT: The Blue Hawks will look to take on the Valley City State University Vikings on Saturday October 20th. Kickoff is set for 2:00 PM MST.
