Blue Hawks Roll Past Tigers 55-6

Dickinson, ND – The Dickinson State University football team beat Iowa Wesleyan University 55-6 on Saturday afternoon. The win marks four in a row for the Blue Hawks to up their record to 4-2 and 4-0 in NSAA play.

"Another very good win for our guys," said head coach Pete Stanton. "We set the tempo early on both sides of the ball, ran the ball well and disrupted them on defense. We were able to get everyone in the game and it was a complete team win."

How It Happened

Dickinson State took the opening kickoff and marched on an 8 play, 67-yard drive to score the first touchdown of the game. Drew Boedecker found Kellen Ray in the back of the endzone on an eight-yard pass to put the home team up 6-0. Jace Johnson kicked the PAT and the Blue Hawks led 7-0 with 11:37 to go in the first quarter. The defense forced a turnover on the next possession when Nick Miller recorded an interception. The offense cashed in off the turnover when Riley Linder scored from one yard out. The PAT was good and the Blue Hawks led 14-0 with 7:58 to go in the first quarter. The Dickinson State defense forced a quick three-and-out and the offense wasted no time getting back on the scoreboard when Boedecker found Tyger Frye for an 18-yard touchdown. The two-point conversion was no good and Dickinson State led 20-0 mid way through the first quarter. After another three and out, Dickinson State went on a 5-play, 73-yard drive to extend the lead. Boedecker found Conor McCarvel for a 13-yard touchdown strike and the Blue Hawks led 27-0 after the first quarter.

The second quarter was much of the same when Braden Zuroff ran it in from seven yards out for another Blue Hawk touchdown. The PAT was good and Dickinson State led 34-0 with 14:47 left in the second quarter. The Blue Hawk defense forced another three-and-out and Cody Asbeck found pay dirt on a 25-yard touchdown run of his own. Johnson hit the PAT and Dickinson State extended the lead to 41-0. The Blue Hawks weren't done yet as back-up QB Bridger Grovom found Braden Zuroff on a 34-yard touchdown pass to make the score 48-0 at halftime.

Iowa Wesleyan found the endzone in the third quarter but the two-point conversion failed and the Blue Hawks still led 48-6 late in the third. Dickinson State would score one more time as Grovom found Nathan Schumacher in the back of the endzone for 10-yard score. The PAT was good and Dickinson State led 55-6. Javonte Oliphant would intercept an Iowa Wesleyan pass and the game would end 55-6.

INDIVIDUAL STATS

Dickinson State racked up 452 yards of offense on the day. Drew Boedecker completed 12 of 14 passes for 191 yards and three touchdowns. Riley Linder led the Blue Hawks on the ground with 57 yards on nine carries with one touchdown. Braden Zuroff also recorded 42 yards on 10 carries and a touchdown. Tyger Frye led the receivers with six catches for 80 yards and a touchdown.

Defensively, Austin Heimer led the Blue Hawks with five tackles. Matt Anderson also had four tackles and half a sack. Austin Dennis and Zach Fleming also recorded sacks on the day. Javonte Oliphant and Nick Miller each had interceptions for Dickinson State.

The Blue Hawks next game will be Saturday, October 23rd when they take on Valley City State University in Valley City, ND. Kickoff is set for 2:00pm MT.
