Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Blue Hawks fall to Orediggers in Saturday showdown

BUTTE, Mont. – The Dickinson State University (DSU) women's basketball team fell 73-52 to Montana Technological University (MTU) on Saturday afternoon. The Blue Hawks drop their record to 0-10, while the Orediggers improve to a 6-4 slate.

How It Happened –

The Orediggers took a quick 19-14 advantage after the first quarter of action – which was backed by ten points off the MTU bench. The Blue Hawks cut the Oredigger lead down to two after a Lindsay Peterson (JR/Watford City, ND) three-pointer to open the second quarter. With 8:23 left in the first half, Peterson connected on a layup to even the score at 22-22. The Orediggers responded with a layup on their own to push the lead back in favor of MTU. Peterson continued her hot streak and gave the Blue Hawks the one-point lead. However, over the final minutes of the second quarter, the Orediggers went on a 10-4 run to take the six-point advantage heading into halftime.

However, offensive struggles for the Blue Hawks spoiled any hopes of a comeback after they were outscored 22-14 and 15-8 in the final two quarters of action.

Breaking It Down –

Senior Courtney Olson (SR/Mandan, ND) led the Blue Hawks in scoring with 16 points – with 12 coming from the free-throw line. Olson's 16-point night is the eighth time this season she has scored in double-figures. Teammate Lindsay Peterson rounded out the final Blue Hawk in double-figure scoring with a season-high ten points. Ashlie Watts (SR/Kimberly, ID) continues to lead the Blue Hawks in assists as she dished out three in the loss.

As a team, the Blue Hawks shot 27.9 percent from the floor, 16.7 from range, and 87.5 from the foul line. DSU added 27 rebounds, eight steals and two blocks, while surrendering 16 turnovers.

Up Next –

The Blue Hawks open up North Star conference action next weekend as they host Valley City State University (VCSU) on Saturday, Dec. 4. Tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m. (MT) with the men to follow.
