Blue Hawks ready to take on NCAA D-1 opponent

Although the Blue Hawk men's basketball team (0-5) is searching for their first win for the 2021-22 season, they could do so against a highly talented team in the University of Montana (UM) in an exhibition game on Tuesday night. The Blue Hawks are scheduled to tip off against the Griz at 7:30 p.m. (MT).

About the University of Montana Griz – NCAA Division 1

  • The Griz have yet to open their 2021-22 season as they square off against DSU for their season opener.
  • UM competes in the Big Sky Conference and composed a 15-13 over record a season ago – which marked them sixth place overall.

About the Dickinson State Blue Hawks –

  • During their five games of the season, the Blue Hawks are averaging 61.2 points, 28.6 rebounds and 8.8 assists per game, while shooting 42% from the field, 42% from beyond the arc and 53% from the line.
  • Bryce Knox currently leads the team with averaging 12.8 points per game, along with with 64 points on the year. Close behind is Aushanti Potts-Woods with 47 and John Evans with 42. Defensively, Jalon Tinnin leads the team with 30 boards, followed by Josiah Haaland with 26.

Preseason Rankings –

  • Off the 11-team Big Sky Conference, UM ranked 4th in the 2021-22 pre-season coaches' poll. The Griz sit behind Big Sky favorite South Utah, Weber State and Montana State.

Series History –

  • Tonight's game will be the second time the two teams have faced off in program history, with UM taking the 1-0 advantage. The Blue Hawks fell by a score of 51-78 a season ago.

Coming Home –

  • Head basketball coach, Derek Selvig, is no stranger to the Griz as he played collegiately for UM as a player. The 7-0 center helped the Grizzlies to back-to-back NCAA tournament berths during his playing career (2008-12), finishing with 844 points and 560 rebounds. As an All-Big Sky selection in 2012, he led the Grizzlies for blocked shots, and in 2011, he was the team leader for 3-pointers made.
