Blue Hawks sweep Lancers

Dickinson, ND – The Dickinson State University softball team took both games of their double header against the Lancers from Mount Marty University in Yankton, SD on Thursday.

Game 1 (DSU 18, MM 13 (8 Innings)

Box Score

A late Mount Marty Rally forced the game into extra innings, but a 5-run top of the 8th powered the (RV) Blue Hawks softball team to an 18-13 win in game 1 of a doubleheader on Thursday in South Dakota.

The Blue Hawks jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning thanks to RBI hits by Dallis Mitchell (FR/Phoenix, AZ) and Bella Castillo (FR/Gridley, CA), but the hosts from Yankton, SD would score 8 unanswered runs to take a commanding lead heading into the top of the 5th inning. However, DSU would answer back with five runs of their own, using a Mitchell single and Katelyn Kubitschek (JR/Phoenix, AZ ) triple to pull within one run before an Emilie Sickler suicide squeeze would tie the game at 8.

The roller coaster would continue as MMU took the lead 9-8 on a ground out in the bottom of the inning. A Hailey Enriquez (SO/Sparks, NV) solo home run would tie things up for DSU in the top of the 6th inning, but again MMU would respond with two runs in the bottom half of the inning to take an 11-9 lead. DSU would again respond, however, using a few key MMU errors and took the lead 11-10 with a two-out RBI single by Paisley Garcia (FR/Las Vegas, NV) after a Rhea Paiva (SO/Las Vegas, NV) sac fly tied the game. Mitchell would deliver again with an RBI double to extend the DSU lead to two. The Blue Hawks would then get two outs in the bottom of the 7th before an Emma Burns 2-run home run tied the game and sent it into extra innings.

In extra innings the Blue Hawks again used extra base hits, this time from Emilie Sickler (JR/Dickinson, ND) and Pavia, to take an 18-13 lead, before Paisley Garcia slammed the door shut in the bottom of the inning retiring the Lancers in order.

Game 2 (DSU 7, MM 2)

Box Score

After the 1st inning of game two it looked like another shootout was in order, but Madeline Peralta (SO/El Monte, CA) would settle in for the Blue Hawks allowing her offense to work as DSU won 7-2 to sweep the mid-week double header. Again, Dickinson State would jump out to an early 1st inning lead, using RBI singles from Emilie Sickler and Dallis Mitchell before the Lancers responded with 2 runs of their own to tie the game at two. From there Peralta would go 4.2 scoreless innings before the Blue Hawks turned to Paisley Garcia to finish the game. In contrast to the extra base hitting display put on in game one, DSU used small ball to slowly build a lead getting an RBI from six different players, none coming on extra base hits. Their only XBH of the game came in the form of a double by Trinity Anderson (JR/Paradise, UT), who also drove in the eventual winning run with an RBI ground out in the 4th inning.
