DICKINSON, ND – The Dickinson State University baseball team dropped two close games in a non-conference double header against Mayville State University. The Blue Hawks now sit at 1-9 on the season.
Game 1 (1-0 MSU)
Box Score
The Blue Hawks and Comets started the double header with an old-fashioned pitcher's duel. DSU starter Jose Torres (SO/Santo Domingo, DR) went eight innings striking out seven and walking one, while MSU starter Parker Stohr went six innings striking out 12. Unfortunately for the home team, Mayville State was able to push one run across against Torres, an 8th inning 2-out RBI double from Jared McCorrister would account for the only run of the ball game. DSU managed nine hits on the game, including three each from Kael Richards (FR/Great Falls, MT) and Robert Encinas (FR/Tucson, AZ), but Mayville state pitching was able to pitch around base runners in multiple innings to protect the shutout.

Game 2 (3-2 MSU)
Box Score
Pitching took center stage again in game two, as the Comets once again squeezed out a one run victory despite a solid start from DSU pitcher Joel Torres (SR/New York, NY). Mayville State would strike first, a Jared McCorrister double scored Marcus Wohl, who reached on an error, to give the Comets a 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the 2nd inning the Blue Hawks would answer back. After a line out by lead off hitter Karson Backer (SR/Center, ND), Robert Encinas reached first on an infield single to the left of second base. MSU starter Conner Dinaro would then strike out Kael Richards for the second out before Derrick Calvillo (SO/Tucson, AZ) drove a first pitch fastball into the right-center gap for an RBI triple, tying the game at 1-1.
Errors would plague DSU again in the 4th as MSU took advantage of two in the inning to take a 2-1 lead. In the bottom of the 5th inning Calvillo would again find the right-center gap, this time for a double, before scoring on Jacob Clinton (FR/Lewistown, MT)'s 2-out RBI single to knot the score at 2-2.
In the top of the 6th inning, Torres would get a strike out to start the inning before Gunner Garpestad singled to right field. Mayville State would then attempt a sacrifice bunt, but it was popped up to the catcher Calvillo, for the second out. However, the Comets would again get a late 2-out double, this time from Payton DeLuca, to take a 3-2 lead.
The Blue Hawks threatened in the bottom of the 6th, loading the bases with 1 out, but MSU pitcher Kenny Stewart would get back-to-back strikeouts to escape the jam. Tamarek Wrinkle (SO/Tacoma, WA) pitched around a 2-out double to strikeout the side in the top of the 7th to keep it a one run game, and a 2-out triple by Angel Faras (JR/Tucson, AZ) in the bottom of the 7th put the Blue Hawks in position to tie, but Stewart would get Cade Ostenson (SO/Newcastle, WY) to strike out securing the victory for the Comets.
