Blue Hawks Split with Trojans, Move into 3rd Place

Dickinson, ND – Dickinson State University split the weekend series with Dakota State University 2-2. After the weekend, DSU sits tied for 3rd place in the 8-team NSAA with one weekend to go. The Blue Hawks now sit at 12-19 (10-9 NSAA) on the season.

Game 1 (6-3 DSU)

The Dickinson State baseball team rallied to claim a 6-3 victory on Tuesday against Dakota State University (19-20 (12-12 NSAA)) in game 1 on Friday.

Dakota State got the scoring started in the top of the 2nd inning, using a 3-run home run to take an early 3-0 lead. In the bottom of the 3rd inning, the Blue Hawks scored their first run of the game on a Robert Encinas RBI double to make it 3-1.

In the bottom of the 4th inning, DSU took its first lead, using 5 singles to take a 6-3 lead. After the Blue Hawks loaded the bases with nobody out, Angel Faras drove a single to center field to score Jacob Clinton and Mathias Dufner making it 3-3. A walk to Derrick Calvillo walked to load the bases again and Cade Ostenson singled home two more runs making it 5-3 Blue Hawks. Robert Encinas then singled to left, bringing home pinch runner Alberto Nieto, for the final score of the game.

Dickinson State starter Joel Torres settled in after the 2nd inning to throw a complete game for the Blue Hawks, never allowing more than one hit in an inning. Torres picked up his third win of the season, good for second on the team.

Game 2 (6-2 DSU).

Box Score

Dickinson State took an early lead and held on for a 6-2 victory in game 2 on Friday. The Blue Hawks got another great effort from their starting pitcher, this time Jacob Scully, to secure the victory.

After a 1-2-3 top of the first inning for Scully, Derrick Calvillo led off the bottom half of the inning with his team leading 7th home run giving the Blue Hawks a 1-0 lead.

In the top of the second inning, the Trojans responded with a run of their own after the first 3 batters reached giving the visitors a 1-1 tie and runners on second and third with no one out. However, Scully was able to work out the jam and keep the game tied. In the bottom half of the inning, the Blue Hawks scored 2 runs on a Cade Ostenson single to right field, and one more on a Robert Encinas sacrifice fly, to take a 4-1 lead.

DSU continued to add on in the bottom of the 3rd, scoring two more runs on an Angel Faras RBI double, giving them a 6-1 lead. The Trojans added one run in the 6th inning on a bases load walk, but that was all they would get as Nathan Delahanty retired the side in order in the 7th for the Blue Hawks to shut the door in a non-save situation.

Game 3 (6-2 DaSU)

Box Score

Dakota State flipped the script in game 3 on Friday, taking their own 6-2 victory to avoid being swept on the day. The Trojans only outhit the Blue Hawks 9-8 for the game, but a 4-2 advantage in extra base hits was enough to put them over the top.

Dakota State struck first, scoring on a ground out in the top of the 1st to take a 1-0 lead. They would add on to that lead in the 3rd, scoring on an RBI double and a walk to make it 3-0. An RBI single in the top of the 4th inning made it 4-0 Trojans.

Another RBI double made it 5-0 DaSu in the top of the 6th inning. In the bottom half of the inning, Mathias Dufner got the Blue Hawks on the board with his 6th home run of the year, a two-run shot to left field, to make it 5-2. Dakota State tacked on another run in the top of the 7th for the final margin, 6-2.

Game 4 (11-4 DaSU)

Box Score

Dakota State University took game 4 of the NSAA series 11-4 on Sunday earning the series split with Dickinson State. The Trojans score 7 runs in the top of the 1st inning to jump start their win.

After the 7-run first for DaSU, both teams were scoreless until the bottom of the 5th inning when scored 3 unearned runs on an error and a 2-RBI single by Kael Richards to come within 4 at 7-3. The Trojans, however, answered right back with three runs of their own in the top of the 6th to make it 10-3 Trojans.

An Angel Faras solo home run to lead off the 7th inning for the Blue Hawks accounted for the only other Blue Hawk run.
