Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's basketball uses lock down defense to beat Midland

BELLEVUE, NEB. - Samantha Oase had her second consecutive double-double with 12 points and 15 rebounds, Lindsay Peterson (13) and Heather LaBree (12) both scored in double digits as Dickinson State (2-0, 0-0 NSAA) took down Midland Lutheran (0-2, 0-0 GPAC), 63-51, to wrap up the Chick-fil-A Classic hosted by Bellevue University.

Dickinson State held Midland to just 27% (17-63) shooting as they won all four quarters for a wire-to-wire win. The Warriors took a 3-0 lead to start the game but back-to-back buckets by Peterson and LaBree gave DSU the lead soon after. The Blue Hawks took an 11-3 lead on a lay-up by McKenzie Johnson but strong three-point shooting from the Warriors kept it close as the first quarter ended with DSU leading 17-16.

Midland scored the first six points of the second quarter to take a 22-17 lead, but again Dickinson State had an answer again going on a 10-0 run started by a Peterson three to take a 27-22 lead. DSU shot 6-16 from the field in the quarter to take a 31-27 lead into the break.

DSU extended their lead in the third quarter shooting 50% (4-8) from three and outrebounding the Warriors 13-5 to stretch their lead to 53-42 heading into the final quarter. The fourth quarter was dominated by defense as the teams combined for only 19 total points. Dickinson State scored six of their ten points from the line to secure the win. "It was a great team win today as out defense led the way" said coach Eric Nelson, "We had three players in double figures and shared the ball really well. We are happy to start the season 2-0 but we have a lot of work still to do".
