JAMESTOWN – After a week of snow-induced shutdown, the Dickinson State women's basketball team (5-8, 0-1) was able to make it down the freeway to take on a powerful University of Jamestown team (10-2) on Sunday afternoon. Samantha Oase led the Blue Hawks with 13 points, and Tinley Pierson scored 10 off the bench, but it wasn't enough to overcome 21 turnovers as the Blue Hawks fell, 76-53, to the Jimmies.
Jamestown raced out to a quick 9-2 lead in the early going, but a 7-2 run out of a timeout brought DSU back to within two at 11-9 midway through the quarter. After UJ pushed their lead back to four, 17-13, with 2:10 left in the quarter, neither team was able to score the rest of the way, as the teams combined to go 0-8 to end the frame.
In the second quarter, Jamestown got their separation. Starting the quarter on a 24-3 run to balloon their lead all the way to 41-16 with 4:29 left in the half. Seven of the Blue Hawk's 21 turnovers came during that stretch and proved the difference in the game. By the end of the half, Jamestown had stretched their lead to 25 and headed to the halftime break up 49-24.
The teams played even in the third quarter, with both teams scoring just 11 points each, and the Blue Hawks outscored the Jimmies in the fourth quarter, 18-16. Unfortunately, the big Jamestown run in the second quarter was too much to overcome as the Jimmies coasted to the 23-point victory in the second half with DSU never able to put together a real threat.
Despite no Blue Hawk having more than four rebounds for the game, they were outrebounded by just three, 40-37, as seven DSU players pulled down at least three boards. Kayden Steele added eight points for Dickinson State while Lindsay Peterson chipped in six.
WHATS NEXT
The Blue Hawks will take a quick holiday break before heading to Billings, Montana for rematches with Montana Western and Rocky Mountain College on December 29-30.
