BISMARCK – Dickinson State got a balanced scoring effort, as five Blue Hawks scored at least eight points, but a huge second half run doomed DSU as they fell, 83-64, to NCAA Division II University of Mary in exhibition action on Tuesday.
Gus Wright scored a team-high 13 points and grabbed five rebounds to lead DSU as they led for a large portion of the first half, and went into the halftime break trailing 41-40. Rebounds played a large part in their first half success, as they outrebounded the Marauders, 17-14, in the opening 20 minutes to hang close. The Blue Hawks shot 14-30 in the half, including 6-9 from deep and a perfect 6-6 at the free throw line, in a strong offensive first half.
The Blue Hawks went cold in the second half, however, going just 8-28 from the field and 3-14 from deep, as they failed to keep up with the NSIC hosts from Bismarck. UMary shot 16-33 in the second half and outrebounded the Blue Hawks, 25-16, to squash any chance for a DSU comeback. An 11-0 run early in the half took the Marauder lead from 49-46 to 60-46 with 10:48 left in the game and proved to be too much for DSU to overcome.
Kose Egbule, Christian Murphy, and John Evans all had nine points for DSU and Egbule pulled down a team-high seven rebounds. Jaiden Wright had six points, five rebounds, and four assists in a solid game off the bench, while Tyce Dahlberg added eight points for the Blue Hawks.
