Blue Hawks go 0-2 in Friday double-header

TUCSON, Ariz. – The Dickinson State softball team fell 0-2 during their fifth day competing in the Tucson Invitational Games (TIG) in Tucson, Arizona. The Blue Hawks fell 17-1 to (RV) University of Jamestown in game one, before falling 4-2 to Roosevelt University in game two. With the pair of losses, the Blue Hawks move to 8-10 on the year.

Game One: Dickinson State University 1, (RV) University of Jamestown 17

Things did not start out as planned for the Blue Hawks as the Jimmies tagged on seven runs in the opening inning for the early lead. UJ connected for three more runs in the following two innings to push their lead up to 10.

The lone run of the game for the Blue Hawks came off the bat of Ari Martinez – as she connected for the long-ball over the left-field fence. However, the Jimmie offense stayed dominant and strung together another seven-run inning in the top of the fifth inning to come away with the 17-1 win.

From the Box Score –

The Blue Hawks were outhit in the contest, 12-5, with hits coming from Rhea Paiva, Ari Martinez, Hailey Enriquez, Cassidy Venner, and Emilie Sickler. Aside from Martinez's homerun, Venner's double was the final extra-base hit in the loss. Defensively, Jamestown capitalized on seven Blue Hawk errors in the game.

From the mound, Ari Martinez suffered the loss as she let up seven runs (5ER) off six hits in the first inning. Dallis Mitchell entered the game in relief and suffered a six hit, ten-run, - all of which were unearned – in 4.2 innings pitched. Madeline Peralta aided the DSU pitching staff as she threw for .1 innings and walked one in three batters faced.

Game Two: Dickinson State University 2, Roosevelt University 4

In the second game of the day, DSU fell in a close, two-run, battle with Lakers of Roosevelt University. Roosevelt got on the board first in the top of inning after a home-run shot by RU's Fudge for the early lead. DSU evened things up at 1-1 in the bottom of the inning after a sacrifice bunt by Hailey Enriquez to bring home Katelyn Kubitschek – who reached base on a lead-off single to right field.

The Blue Hawks notched their first and only lead of the game in the bottom of the third inning with a sacrifice fly by Rhea Paiva to bring home Emilie Sickler. The Lakers responded with three, one-run innings to take the 4-2 advantage. However, the Blue Hawks were unable to get anything offensively going in the final inning to fall 4-2 during the second game of the day.

Rhea Paiva led the Blue Hawk attack with two hits in the loss. The final three hits came off the bats of Katelyn Kubitschek, Hailey Enriquez, and Emilie Sickler. Paiva and Enriquez connected for the two RBIs of the game, while Kubitschek and Sickler crossed home plate for the two runs.

From the mound, Ari Martinez pitched the complete game and took the loss for the Blue Hawks. Martinez suffered four runs (3ER) off 13 hits during 33 batters faced.
