Blue Hawks split in day one from Tucson

TUCSON, Ariz. – The Dickinson State University (DSU) baseball team opened their 2022 Tucson spring break trip with a split against Augsburg University (Minn.) earlier today. The Blue Hawks defeated the Auggies, 15-6, in game one, before falling 13-10 in game two. With the day-one split, the Blue Hawks move to 6-10 overall.

Game One: Dickinson State University 15, Augsburg University 6

Jacob Clinton got things started for the Blue Hawks after a lead-off single to left field. Clinton advanced to third after a double by Derrick Calvillo and would cross home after a Dawson Cortese single to right field for the early 1-0 lead.

After a scoreless second inning, the Blue Hawks doubled their lead after an RBI single by Angel Faras to score Derrick Calvillo – who reached base on a lead-off walk. DSU jumped their lead to 6-0 after a four-run, fourth inning.

Kobe Krenz led things off with a walk but got called out after a fielder's choice on the next at-bat. With two outs, Cade Ostenson singles on a line drive to score pinch-runner Jacob Clinton. On the next at-bat, Derrick Calvillo connected for an RBI triple to deep center field to bump the score to 4-0. Teammate Dawson Cortese followed with an RBI triple of his own and would cross home on a Mathias Dufner single to center field for the 6-0 lead.

The Auggies roped in a run in the bottom of the fourth for their first run of the game. However, the biggest scoring inning for the Blue Hawks was during the fifth as they tagged on five more runs for the commanding 11-1 lead. DSU continued to pour in the runs in the final two innings for the 15-1 lead. Although the Auggies hit in five runs in the seventh inning, it was not enough for the late comeback as the Blue Hawks sealed the 15-6 game one victory.

The Blue Hawks combined for 21 hits in the win with Jacob Clinton leading the team with four hits, followed by Derrick Calvillo and Dawson Cortese with three. Teammates Cade Ostenson, Mathias Dufner, Angel Faras and Kobe Krenz added two, while Juan Garcia, Brannan Hogan, and Alberto Nieto rounded out the final three hits.

Starting pitcher Jacob Scully got the win for the Blue Hawks as he let up one run (1ER) off six hits in 3.2 innings pitched. Scully added five strikeouts in the win.

Game Two: Dickinson State 10, Augsburg University 13

In the second game of the day, the Blue Hawks looked to come away with another commanding win as they were holding a 10-4 lead with two innings left to play. However, a huge eight-run, sixth inning gave life back to the Auggies and escaped with the come-from-behind win in the second game of the day.

Of the team's 13 hits, Mathias Dufner led the way with three – including an extra-base hit with a triple. Teammates Jacob Clinton, Dawson Cortese, and Angel Faras followed with two hits each. The final four hits came off the bats of Cade Ostenson, Derrick Calvillo, Brendan Schneiter and John Hudson.

From the mound, Juan Garcia suffered the loss as he let up three runs (1ER) in .1 innings pitched. Starting pitcher Brennan Hogan posted a three run (1ER), four-hit line in three innings pitched. Kobe Krenz followed with a six run – all of which were unearned – in 2.2 innings pitched.
