Baseball falls twice on Friday in Arizona

TUCSON, Ariz. – The Dickinson State University (DSU) baseball team dropped a pair of games in Friday's double-header. The Blue Hawks fell 12-10 in game one against Hamline University (Minn.) and fell in a 12-inning game against Gustavus Adolphus by a score of 4-3. With the losses, the Blue Hawks drop to 7-13 overall.

Game One: Dickinson State University 10, Hamline University 12

The Pipers of Hamline University (HU) took the early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning after a two-out single by HU's Mac Enlow to score Cullen Buck. After a scoreless second inning for the Blue Hawks, the Pipers upped their lead to 4-0 with a four-hit, three-run inning. In the top of the third, the Blue Hawks cut HU's lead down to one. With one out, Richie Cortese tripled on a line drive to right field and would be held up on the next at-bat after Alberto Nieto hit a hard ground ball to third base and reached first on an error by HU's third baseman. With runners on the corners, Jacob Clinton connected for an RBI-single to left field to score Cortese. After a walk by Cade Ostenson to load the bases, Dawson Cortese singled on a line drive to left field to bring home Nieto and Clinton.

After a scoreless fourth inning, the Blue Hawks took their first lead of the game with a three-run inning. Jacob Clinton started with a lead-off single to center field and moved into scoring position after a Cade Ostenson walk on the next at-bat. After a wild pitch by HU's Braden Schneider, both runners advanced to third and second with no outs. DSU's Derrick Calvillo earned his first RBI of the day after he grounded out to second base – which evened the game at 4-4 as Clinton crossed home plate.

The Blue Hawks hit their way into their first lead of the game after Dawson Cortese connected for a triple to right field to bring home Ostenson for the 5-4 lead. DSU tagged on their final run of the inning after a Mathias Dufner on the next at-bat to score Cortese. However, in the bottom of the same inning, Hamline sparked a two-run inning to even things at 6-6.

HU continued their offensive pressure in the following inning to regain the lead, 8-6. After a lead-off triple by Ostenson to started the seventh inning, the Blue Hawks cut the Piper lead down to one after Ostenson crossed home plate on an error by HU's shortstop. After a one-run inning by Hamline in the bottom of the seventh, the Blue Hawks grabbed the 10-9 lead after Derrick Calvillo connected for a 3RBI double to score teammates Kobe Krenz, Clinton, and Ostenson. However, the lead did not last long as the Pipers responded with a three-run inning of their own to claim the 12-10 game one victory.

The Blue Hawks connected for 14 hits in the game one loss with Jacob Clinton and Dawson Cortese leading the team with three hits. Richie Cortese followed with two of his own, while Cade Ostenson, Derrick Calvillo, Mathias Dufner, Juan Garcia, Kobe Krenz and Alberto Nieto rounding out the final six hits. Derrick Calvillo led the team with four RBIS, while Jacob Clinton and Cade Ostenton crossed home plate three times each.

From the mound, Rylan Richards suffered the loss for the Blue Hawks after throwing for .1 innings. Richards let up three runs (2ER) in three batters faced. Six other Blue Hawks aided in the pitching during the game in Jacob Scully, Jackson Schaubel, John Koronka, Brannan Hogan, Jose Torres, and Alberto Nieto.

Game Two: Dickinson State University 3, Gustavus Adolphus 4 – 12-innings

The Blue Hawks struck first after a lead-off single by Mathias Dufner to start the inning. After back-to-back outs, John Hudson connected for a single of his own to bring around Dufner for the early 1-0 lead. DSU doubled their lead in the following inning after a Cade Ostenson double to right field to score Juan Garcia – who started the inning off with a double of his own to center field. Gustavus responded with a one-run inning in the bottom of the fourth to cut the lead down to one, 2-1.

After a scoreless fifth inning, Gustavus tied things at 2-2 after an RBI-double by GA's Mocchi. That score would stand until the end of the seventh – where both teams locked into extra-innings. It wasn't until the 12th inning until a winner was decided. The Blue Hawks took the go-ahead lead after a single by Juan Garcia to score Jacob Scully. However, GA rallied in the bottom of the inning – with two-runs – to come away with the extra-inning victory.

Of the team's ten hits in the loss, Juan Garcia, Cade Ostenson, and Mathias Dufner recorded a multiple hit game with two each. Jacob Clinton, Robert Encinas, Jacob Scully, and John Hudson rounded out the final hits of the game.

From the mound, Stevie Ruelas suffered the loss for the Blue Hawks during the final inning. Ruelas let up two runs (2ER) off one hit, while walking four in 2.1 innings pitched. Teammates Jonathan Lerma, Tyler Gray, Cade Kazmirski, Trent Richter, Alberto Nieto, and Kobe Krenz aided the Blue Hawks' pitching in the game.
