Baseball falls in final inning to Lancers

YANKTON, S.D. – The Dickinson State University (DSU) baseball team suffered a bottom-of-the-seventh loss in the opening game of the four-game series against the Lancers of Mount Marty University (MMU) earlier today. The Blue Hawks held the 3-0 lead with two innings left to play and fell 7-3 for their sixth loss of the year, while the Lancers improve to 8-2 overall.

How it Happened –

After three scoreless innings, Dickinson State got things rolling with a hit-by-pitch on DSU's Dawson Cortese and a single by Mathias Dufner to advance Cortese to third. After a ground-out by Angel Faras to move Dufner into scoring position, DSU found themselves with two-outs after a strike-out on the next at-bat. However, on a 2-2 count, Brendan Schneiter connected for a single to center-field to score Cortese for the early 1-0 lead. Alberto Nieto followed with a single of his own to bring home Dufner for the 2-0 advantage.

DSU's starting pitcher Jonathan Lerma continued his dominant performance as he shut down the Lancers' offense in the bottom of the fourth inning to keep the 2-0 lead. After an opening strikeout in the top of the fifth, DSU strung three hits together to add to their lead. Derrick Calvillo started off the inning with a line drive to left field. Cortese continued his hot-hitting streak with a double to left field to advance pinch-running Nathaniel Jilek to third. Dufner roped in his first RBI of the game after a single to left field to score Jilek.

It wasn't until the bottom of the sixth inning that the Lancers' bats came alive. After a lead-off single and a hit-by-pitch on the next at-bat, MMU would get on the board after a ground-out to DSU's third baseball Cortese to bring home MMU's Capps. The Lancers would cut the DSU lead down to one after a ground-out on the next play to score MMU's Roemen.

After a scoreless top of the seventh for the Blue Hawks, the Lancers started off the final inning with a lead-off triple to center field. MMU's Linch tied things at 3-3 with a line-drive single to right field to bring home pinch-runner Wishon. However, with two outs and MMU on third and second base, DSU's Kobe Krenz intentionally walked MMU's Hancock to load the bases. On a 1-1 count, MMU's Townsend connected for the walk-off grand slam win in the opening game of the four-game series.
