DICKINSON, N.D. – The Dickinson State baseball team split a pair of games against Mayville State University on Friday afternoon. The Blue Hawks defeated the Comets 2-1 in game one but fell 2-1 in game two. With the split, the Blue Hawks move to 13-20 on the year and 6-7 in North Star standings.
Game One: Dickinson State University 2, Mayville State 1
It wasn't until the sixth inning until a run was highlighted on the scoreboard from Dakota Community Bank & Trust ballpark on Friday afternoon.
After a one-two-three by the Blue Hawks defensively, Dawson Cortese led off the inning with a solo shot over the field fence for the 1-0 lead. DSU doubled their lead in the following inning after a two-out rally. With two outs, Dawson Cortese double on a deep line drive to center field and would round home on the next at-bat after Derrick Calvillo reached base on an error by the second baseman.
With a 2-0 lead, the Comets started off their comeback in the top of the ninth inning off the bst of MSU's Hughes to score Senden. With two outs, the DSU pitching staff and defense came up big and ended the final inning after a pop-out to second baseman Alberto Nieto for the 2-1 game one win.

Dawson Cortese led the Blue Hawk offense going 2-for-4 with one RBI and two runs. The final two hits came off the bats of Derrick Calvillo and Richie Cortese.
From the mound, Jacob Scully picked up the win after a seven-inning performance. Scully let up four hits for zero runs, while striking out seven in the win. Tyler Gray picked up the win as he threw for the final two innings.
Game Two: Dickinson State 1, Mayville State 2
Dickinson State started off the scoring in the bottom of the second inning after a solo shot by Mathias Dufner for the 1-0 lead. However, the Comets of Mayville State sealed the win with a run in the final two innings to come away with the 2-1 win.

The Blue Hawks tallied five hits in the loss with Cade Ostenson leading the way with two. Teammates Mathias Dufner, Robert Encinas, and Kobe Krenz tagged on the final three hits in the game.
From the mound, Brannan Hogan suffered the loss as he let up seven hits for two runs (2ER) in 25 batters faced. Hogan added nine strikeouts in the loss.
