FOREST CITY, Iowa – The No. 3 seed Dickinson State baseball team defeated the No. 6 seed Comets of Mayville State 7-3 in the opening game of the North Star Conference Tournament from Forest City, Iowa on Friday afternoon. With the win, the Blue Hawks advance to the winner's bracket and will play No. 7 seed Viterbo University on Saturday at 6 p.m. The V-Hawks of Viterbo University took down No. 2 seed 8-1 earlier this afternoon for the upset victory.

After a scoreless first inning by both teams, the Comets struck first for the 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning. However, the Blue Hawks responded with a two-run homerun by Robert Encinas to take over the 2-1 lead. In the following inning, the Comets strung together another run to tie things at 2-2 until DSU added another run in the bottom of the third inning to regain the one-run lead, 3-2.
The Blue Hawks added to their lead with a two-run, four-hit inning to extend their lead up to three. After a ground out to lead off the inning, three singles by Brett Bantle, Dawson Cortese, and Derrick Calvillo loaded the bases. After the second out of the inning, Robert Encinas once again came up big with a 2RBI single to shortstop for the three-run lead.
After another run by in the top of the sixth for the Comets, the Blue Hawks poured in two more runs to take the 7-3 lead – one that would hold to come away with the game one victory in the NSAA Conference Tournament.

Five Blue Hawks recorded a multiple hit game with Robert Encinas leading the way – going 3-for-3 with four RBIs and one run. Brett Bantle, Dawson Cortese, Derrick Calvillo, and Richie Cortese followed with two hits, while Mathias Dufner added the final hit in the game.
From the mound, Jacob Scully took the win after a three-run (2ER), five hit performance in 5.1 innings pitched. Scully added five strikeouts in the win. John Koronka aided the pitching staff during the final 3.2 innings and grabbed the save.
