Blue Hawks use big second half to knock off Presentation

Sagan Osborne | Dickinson State Sports Information Director

ABERDEEN – Samantha Oase and Lindsay Peterson combined for 36 points on 13-29 shooting as Dickinson State (7-14, 2-5) used a huge third quarter to race past Presentation College (1-17, 0-7), 68-47, in NSAA play.

Despite having just one win on the season, Presentation started the game on fire, racing out to an 8-0 lead just three minutes into the game before Oase knocked down a jump shot to end the run. A response by PC made it 10-2 forcing DSU to take their first timeout of the game with 6:07 left in the first quarter. Out of the timeout, Oase scored again, and Tayte Kohn knocked down a three-pointer cutting the deficit to just three, 10-7. Each team added another basket to close out the quarter and the Saints held a 12-9 lead after the first ten minutes.

PC extended their lead to 14-9 to start the second quarter, but Peterson knocked down a three a couple minutes later to knot the score at 14-14. The Blue Hawks took their first lead of the game with 4:47 left in the half when McKenzie Johnson connected from deep, and Oase scored off a turnover to make the score 20-16 DSU. The Saints refused to go away, however, as the teams headed into the halftime break separated by just one point, 25-24 Blue Hawks.

In the second half, the Blue Hawks started to get things rolling. Oase scored on the first possession of the half, knocked down two free throws, Peterson knocked down a triple, and Oase scored again for a quick 9-0 DSU run to take control of the game. Heather LaBree was the first Blue Hawk player not named Oase or Peterson to score in the third quarter when she hit a free throw with 4:26 left to put the Blue Hawks up 42-30. Kohn knocked down her third three-pointer of the game with 26 seconds left to give DSU a 52-36 edge heading into the final 10 minutes. A 16-11 edge in the fourth quarter for DSU grew the lead even further for the final 21-point margin.

Both teams took great care of the ball on the game with DSU winning the turnover battle 9-7. The Blue Hawk bench outscored the Saint bench 29-18 as Dickinson State led by as many as 26 late in the fourth quarter.
