Huge comeback comes up just short in loss to Mayville State

Sagan Osborne | Dickinson State Sports Information Director

DICKINSON – A huge second half comeback came up just short as Dickinson State fell to league leading Mayville State, 55-45, on Saturday afternoon.

It was a game decided by the starting lineups for both teams, as both benches combined for just nine points while each squad had three starters reach double figures in scoring. Lindsay Peterson continued her run of solid play, leading the Blue Hawks with 14 points and 7 rebounds, while Samantha Oase just missed out on a double-double with 13 points and 9 boards. McKenzie Johnson added in 10 points and 5 rebounds as the third Blue Hawk in double figures.

With 3:32 left in the first quarter, Johnson gave Dickinson State the lead, 12-11, with a three-pointer, but the Comets responded with a 9-0 run to close the quarter to take an eight-point lead. The run moved to 13-0 when MSU scored the first five points of the second quarter. With 38 seconds left in the half the Comet lead had ballooned all the way to 20, 36-16. Tinley Pierson got the Blue Hawks back to within 18, but a Comet free throw gave MSU a 19 point cushion headed into the half.

In the third quarter everything changed. The Blue Hawks dominated on both ends of the floor to outscore Mayville State 18-1 in the third ten minutes, and head to the fourth quarter down just two, 38-36. Kept relatively quiet in the first half, Oase exploded for 9 points in the quarter to help fuel the Blue Hawk run. On the defensive end, DSU held Mayville State without a made basket in the quarter, as the Comets shot 0-15 from the field and turned the ball over four times.

Despite the huge comeback, the Blue Hawks were never able to fully close the gap. After a couple of empty possessions for both teams, the Comets went on an 8-2 run to stretch their lead back out to eight. A Peterson triple got the Blue Hawks back to within three 46-43, but that was as close as they would get as Mayville State proved why they sit in first place in the North Star Athletic Association by holding off DSU for the 55-45 win.

WHATS NEXT

The Blue Hawks will take their last road trip of the season when they head east to take on Viterbo University and Waldorf University on February 3-4.
