TUCSON, Ariz. – The Dickinson State softball team kicked off their annual spring trip to Tucson, Arizona with a pair of tough losses on Monday. The Blue Hawks fell 5-4 to Dakota Wesleyan in their first game of the day before dropping game two to (RV) Olivet Nazarene in the afternoon.
GAME 1
The Blue Hawks got the scoring going early in game one, as Ari Martinez homered to center field scoring Dallis Mitchell, who singled a batter earlier, to put DSU up 2-0 in the first inning. After Dakota Wesleyan got a run back in the bottom half of the inning, Kara Conway responded with the second Blue Hawks home run of the day, this one a blast to left field, to put DSU back up by two, 3-1.
In the bottom of the third inning, the Tigers took their first lead of the game, scoring three unearned runs after a pair of two-out errors kept the inning going, putting DWU up 4-3. The teams both posted zeros in the next two innings before another Blue Hawk blast knotted the score at 4-4 in the top of the sixth inning. After the first two batters of the inning were retired, Kaitlyn Rizo sent a ball deep over the left field fence for the tying run.
With the score still tied at 4-4 in the bottom of the seventh, the Tigers were able to push across the winning run to take the game 5-4.
GAME 2
A relentless attack from an Olivet Nazarene team receiving votes nationally proved to be too much for DSU in game two of the day. The Tigers scored three runs in both the first and second innings, and four more in the fourth, to take a commanding early lead. ONU used a five-run fifth inning to push the score over the mercy limit, ending the contest.
The Blue Hawks responded with one run of their own in the first inning on an RBI single by Hailey Enriquez, and two runs in the second inning on a double by Rizo and a ground ball by Rhea Paiva. Another ground ball RBI by Paiva in the third inning provided the last Blue Hawk run.
