Dickinson, N.D. – A pair of complete games from Alexa Kappel and Dallis Mitchell led Dickinson State to a mid-week sweep over Presentation College on Tuesday. The Blue won game one, 8-2, before taking game two, 7-3. Despite the games being played in Dickinson, the Blue Hawks were the designated visiting team.
GAME 1
Dickinson State put up six runs in the final three innings to pull away from Presentation College in game one on Tuesday.
The Blue Hawks took an early 2-0 lead in the second inning when Dallis Mitchell doubled to center field, scoring Kamryn Kuntz, and Alexa Kappel grounded out to score Mitchell from third. An RBI double got the Saints back to within one in the bottom half of the inning, but DSU answered right back in the third when Rhea Paiva scored on a wild pitch.
Another RBI double by PC made it a one run game again heading into the fourth inning, but again DSU had an answer. Mitchell singled to lead off the inning and advanced to third after a stolen base and a ground out. Madeline Peralta roped an RBI double with two outs to score Mitchell from third giving DSU a two-run cushion again.
A two-RBI single by Ari Martinez, and a sacrifice fly by Hailey Enriquez, gave the Blue Hawks some breathing room in the fifth inning. DSU tacked on three more runs in the seventh inning for the final margin, scoring on a groundout by Enriquez, a double by Cassidy Venner, and a triple by Kappel.
The Blue Hawks dominated on the base paths, stealing eight bases with Paiva leading the way with three steals. Mitchell led DSU at the plate going 3-4 with an RBI and Kappel threw 7.0 innings allowing just two runs on five hits, while striking out four and walking two.
GAME 2
Rhea Paiva went 3-3 and stole three more bases and Dallis Mitchell threw a complete game to help Dickinson State defeat Presentation College, 7-3, to win the season series 3-1.
A sacrifice squeeze bunt by Mitchell and an RBI single by Cassidy Venner put DSU out in front, 2-0, in the first inning, but PC would respond with two runs of their own in the bottom of the inning to knot the score at 2-2.
Paiva tripled home Ashlee Potter, who reached earlier on a single, in the second inning to put the Blue Hawks back out in front, but in the bottom of the third inning the Saints tied the game again with an RBI single to left field. A wild pitch scored Alexa Kappel in the fourth inning, and Ari Martinez hit a towering home run off the left field foul pole in the fifth, to give Mitchell all the run support she would need on the day. Kara Conway singled home Paiva in the seventh for the final Blue Hawk run, but Mitchell was lights out for the final five frames, finishing her night with a complete 7 innings on only 84 pitches, allowing 3 runs on five hits, while striking out six and walking none.
