Valley City, N.D. – Samantha Oase scored 21 points and pulled down 9 rebounds, but a cold-shooting fourth quarter doomed Dickinson State as they fell, 65-58, at in-state rival Valley City State on Wednesday.
The Blue Hawks fell behind in a close, back-and-forth first quarter, but a run late in the second quarter by DSU sent the teams in the halftime break tied at 35.
In the second half, it looked like Dickinson State was ready to take control, multiple times jumping out to leads with a chance to expand. VCSU would not go away, however, as the hosts clawed back to take a 50-47 lead with 3:18 left in the third quarter and never looked back.
The Blue Hawks had a number of possessions to either tie the game or take the lead in the fourth quarter but could never break through as VCSU ran away late for the victory.
Kayden Steele had 11 points as the only other Blue Hawk in double figures, while Whitney Edwards led the DSU reserves with 7 points in 14 minutes.
