Blue Hawk softball splits on day two in Jamestown

Jamestown, N.D. – Dickinson State used an offensive explosion in game two to pick up their first win of the 2024 season in Jamestown. The Blue Hawks fell to NCAA Division II University of Mary, 8-0, in game one before taking down Mayville State, 12-4, in game two.

Game One – UMary 8 DSU 0

Dickinson State got hits from Ashlee Potter, Cassidy Venner, and Karissa Comer, but could not scratch across a run against UMary. The Marauders scored in each inning except the fourth to force the five-inning mercy rule, taking advantage of three Blue Hawk errors to score four unearned runs.

Game Two – DSU 12 MSU 4

Dallis Mitchell (4-5, 2 RBI) and Cassy Loa (4-5, 3 RBI) led a 16-hit attack as the Blue Hawks dominated Mayville State for their first victory of 2024. Alexa Kappel and Ashlee Potter both had two hits to make it four Blue Hawks with multi-hit performances as DSU scored in five of the six innings to earn the mercy rule victory.

Mitchell picked up the win in the circle after going 3.1 innings and allowing 4 runs on 9 hits while striking out three and walking two. Kappel provided 2.2 innings of perfect relief, with two strikeouts, to seal the win.

Back-to-back sacrifice flies by Bailey Hansen and Cassidy Venner in the first inning made it 2-0 DSU, and after MSU cut the lead in the half in the second inning, Dickinson State got RBI hits from Loa, Hansen, and Kappel in the home half to push their lead to 7-1.

Another Loa RBI single in the third inning made it 8-2, freshman Baylee Berg drove in her first runs as a Blue Hawk with a two RBI single in the fourth, and Mitchell ended the game with a two-RBI single in the sixth inning.

Mayville State made five errors in the game, but they led to just three unearned runs for DSU, while DSU made none.
