Blue Hawk softball drops two to start spring trip in Arizona

Tucson, Ariz. – Dickinson State dropped a pair of games to tough Arizona competition to open their 2024 spring trip. The Blue Hawks fell to Arizona Christian, 15-5, in game one before dropping game two, 2-0, to Ottawa University – Arizona.

Game One – ACU 15 DSU 5

After ACU jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top the first inning, Dickinson State responded with a huge five run bottom half of the inning to take a 5-1 lead. Cassy Loa worked a lead off walk, was bunted to second by HaiLeigh Davis, and scored on a single by Dallis Mitchell, as DSU answered back almost as quickly as their opponents scored in the top half. Bailey Hansen followed with a double to left field to score Mitchell and the Blue Hawks were in the lead, 2-1.

The hits kept coming, as Kara Conway and Cassidy Venner both hit singles to score Hansen, and a third straight single by Karissa Comer loaded the bases. A strikeout made it two outs for DSU, but a walk by Jai Maddox-Hernandez made it 4-1, and Loa singled home another run one batter later.

Arizona Christian did not shrink away, however, as they scored 14 unanswered runs, and held the Blue Hawks hitless the rest of the way, to take the 15-5 victory in six innings.

Game Two – OUAZ 2 DSU 0

A single by Kara Conway in the second inning was the only Blue Hawk hit of the game, as DSU dropped a pitchers dual to OUAZ in their second game of the day.

Reannan Butler took the tough-luck loss, going all six innings and allowing 2 runs (0 earned) on three hits with two walks and no strikeouts.

Conway also walked as the only other baserunner DSU could muster.
