Dickinson, N.D. – #16 Dickinson State (2-1, 1-0) suffered a rare home loss, falling 22-14 to NCAA Division III Wisconsin-Stout (1-1, 0-0) on Saturday.
The Blue Devils, from Menomonie, Wisconsin, dominated the game for the first 45 minutes, holding DSU scoreless for three quarters with four turnovers on the day, and withstanding a late comeback attempt by the Blue Hawks.
Neither team could put points on the board until a second quarter field goal gave UWS a 3-0 lead with just under 10 minutes to play in the half. Dickinson State had looked poised to take the lead late in the first quarter, but an interception in the end zone kept the game scoreless. Another field goal from Stout with eight minutes left in the half made it 6-0 Blue Devils as DSU continued to struggle moving the ball down field.
Another interception by the Blue Devils near midfield gave them another possession late in the half, but DSU got a huge stop with a forced fumble, recovered by Jayden Heartwell, on their own 5-yard line. A quick three-and-out by the visitors gave them one last shot in the first half and they cashed in with a touchdown pass with just over a minute to go but failed to convert on a 2-point conversion to make it 12-0 UWS at the break.
Stout continued their onslaught in the second half, forcing a quick three-and-out and scored just five plays later to take a commanding 19-0 lead. Another field goal late in the quarter made it 22-0 UWS.
Will Madler connected with Adrien Calderon for a 54-yard touchdown pass and Samaj Clark from 43 yards out to cut the lead to 22-14 with just over six minutes remaining in the game.
A touchdown with 13 seconds from Madler to Clark got the Blue Hawks to within two, 22-20, but the ensuing two-point conversion attempt was no good ending the comeback bid.
The Blue Hawks will be off next week before returning to action on September 28 against the University of Jamestown.
